Which to get...Panny 60gt30 vs 65st30 with prices

OK, so I have settled on the Panny versus the Samsung, but man do I wish the Panny had a bundle that came with it. It was actually a pretty hard decision considering the pricing I am getting.

All below are + tax
59d8000 with bundle for ~1824
60gt30 ~1526
65st30 ~1899 --prob be 1850

So I am thinking instead of the 60gt30 just go ahead and get the larger 65st30. I have read a ton and it looks like the only real difference between the st and the gt is the black depth. But, if you never have both in your house at the same time you would never really know the difference. Good logic huh?

So price wise, what do a few of you think? Is going to the 65st worth an extra $300-350?


Oh, and this is replacing the LC60LE835U ($1856 + tax) I just got. It has too much clouding for my liking. I think I just got a bad set, but it seems the LED (LCDs) just have too much bleed through at this time for my liking.

I got the 55ST30 and I love it. I started off with the 50ST30 and returned it for the 55. Now I'm really wishing I had gone with the 60. I would just say to get the biggest one in your price range. There is no ST bigger than the 65 so you can't really go wrong there. I'm no videophile so I didn't see a reason to go with the GT. I would much rather have the extra 5 inches than slightly better blacks.

The Panasonic fanboys here be damned. My wife and I spent days at Magnolia and the Panasonics didn't come remotely clost to the Samsungs! We bought the Samsung and haven't looked back. Go with your heart!

After reading reviews and going to different shops to check out the VT30 and GT30, I wanted to make the purchase, but it just never excited me. Also aesthetically very unappealing to me.

Not remotely close?? Then there's something wrong with your eyes, or you're a Samsung fanboy

The Samsungs and Panasonics are very close in PQ - with the edge going to Samsung for color and to Panasonic for black levels. AR filters are almost identical. Both brands have excellent PQ.

Build quality and customer service are another story though

There is nothing in my post that mentioned anything about panasonic or Samsung. This is my first Panasonic and I'm extremely happy with it. My brother has the D8000 and he is extremely happy as well. They are both great TVs so I've never had any reason to recommend one over the other. If you have seen both the TVs in home then thats one thing but comparing in best buy is not going to get it done. There are tons of professional reviews that will tell you the Panasonic and Samsung plasmas are really close in picture quality so I don't think many people are going to listen to a guy that just looked at them in best buy.

I'm thinking about getting a 60gt as well. Where are you getting these kind of prices?

For the price, I don't think you can get a better deal than the ST30. Research the threads, separate out the fanboy stuff and don't miss statements made by those who have calibrated them.

If I buy it will be at the bottom dollar price closer to Christmas or shortly after.

GT is also THX certified, has an additional HDMI and additional USB port. Bigger is kind of nice, but the GT will have a better picture. That said, the D8000 really competes with the VT series so you are not really comparing apples to apples. Not sure what your priorities are between PQ and size, but I would also consider the 55VT as well. How far are you going to be sitting from the TV? Don't pay too much attention to the bundle. It is a sub-par BD player with a couple pairs of $30 glasses. After the BD player dies at the end of the year and the neighbor kid sits on a pair of the glasses, you will wonder why it ever swayed your decision! Just my 2 cents.

THX is not the best, it's actually limiting especially if you're going to get it calibrated. And if you want to spend the extra $$ on calibration then the ST30 would be the way to go since you're best image won't be on THX on the GT30.

60" is enough if you watch cable or satellite. If you only watch a real HD signal then 65" for sure. Consider that the bigger the screen the more increased poor signal quality is and that HD from some sources are really not all that and can produce a really looking horrid image during dark scenes.

BTW, the ST30 out performed the GT25 in shadow details during a shootout earlier this year.

It's very possible that the Panasonics settings were screwed up. Best Buy tends to be that way where Panasonics are concerned.

The ST30s on the wall (mixed in with higher priced LEDs) looked like crap to me, but the 50" GT30 in the Magnolia room looked nice, though the larger 8000 series Sammy looked a little sharper, though "crunchier", on Ironman, FWIW.

Never heard the term "crunchier" used before for TVs. Having briefly owned by the Samsung 64D8000 and Panasonic 65VT30, I would agree the Samsung was just a bit sharper.

Why aren't you looking at the 59d7000?

The 8000 is a waste of money, unless you really want a claw stand or a crappy web browser.

I'd definitely say go with the Samsung if the price doesn't bother you.

I love my 59D7000.

I am looking at getting a 50in Panasonic for my living room, but that's just because they are cheaper and the smaller sets from samsung aren't so hot. But I have no doubt that the 59D7000 has a better picture than all save maybe the VT30.
