I am finally in the market for an 80" set and, having followed the 632 owners thread since its inception, wish it were still available. Alas, other than a floor model for sale at the local Wally world (for cheap but with who knows how many hours), the supply is gone.
While looking for other options I came across a Sharp model at Sam's that is not yet listed on their US web page - lc-80le642u
Here is the link to the model on their Canadian site:
Here is the Spec Sheet in .pdf:
LC-80LE642U_SPEC_SHEET.pdf 832k .pdf file
It looks like a current "new" model created from bits and pieces of older technology (FYI - build dates on all of the sets in the store are Sept. 13).
Reading through the info and comparing it to the spec sheet for the 632u you can see that both models share the chassis, inputs and GUI. The big difference seems to be in the display panels and associated drivers. If you trust the provided info it shows both sets to be full array backlit but the 642 lacks the X-gen/ultra brilliant tech in the 632 (which is the main reason that set is so highly regarded).
I am sure there are other differences under the skin but the display in the store blasting Disney Christmas movie previews looked pretty good.
So for just under $3k is this a deal on a "632 light" or a pass and look towards the edge lit models?
