Dorm + Subwoofer (?)

I'm planning on putting a 5.1 system in my dorm room, but I'm not sure what sub to get. I'd be using it at mostly lower volumes for about 70% music and 30% movies/games, with a budget of ~$350. Aesthetics aren't an absolute top priority, but something more than a plain cube would be nice.

I've been looking at Definitive's ProSub 800 (I have a Definitive at home that I'm pretty happy with), but I'm not entirely sure of what I should be looking for.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

The ProSub 800 claims that it goes down to 20hz. While I have no direct experience with it, that seems unlikely with an MSRP $399 8" sub. The Energy S10.3 10" on sale for $249 at Newegg, or the Outlaw Audio M8 or HSU STF-1 at around $300 would likely be better deals. Perhaps someone else has more info on the ProSub 800.

I'm guessing it's solid concrete and sealed?

I'd read that it doesn't seem like it really goes that low, but reviews tend to indicate that it's great in this price range regardless. I'll look into the two you mentioned.

The floors are concrete, and the walls are fairly thick as well (concrete-filled according to a friend who looked at the architect's schematics). I have a stairwell on one side and an electrical closet on the other, so the only concern is the room directly below mine.

I wouldn't worry about the noise until you get a complaint. It's possible they may not even be able to hear it.

When you look at sub specs, they'll typically list a frequency response in a range with +/- 2db or +/- 3db. That means the sub is supposed to be in that range with only that amount of fluctuation, and then most ported subs will start to roll of pretty steeply at the end of that range. The DefTech doesn't list any db response for the range, which is how they get away with saying it goes down that low. Could be -12db at 20hz.

It's also helpful to know that when more typical brick and mortar store type subs do list the db fluctuation in a range , such as the Energy or DefTech, they tend to be overly optimistic, whereas HSU and Outlaw Audio list specs that are generally accurate for what you will get, given that room acoustics also have an effect.

If you look up reviews for the Energy S10.3, also look for reviews on the Mirage Omni S10. Mirage and Energy are owned by the same company, so those two subs are the same design with only minor differences; their performance is essentially the same.

And keep in mind that a 10" subwoofer is generally better than an 8" subwoofer, all other things equal (e.g. equivalent quality woofer and amp).

Considering your in college and I'm guessing money is tight...why not build your own since you probably have access to all kinds of tools or buy something on craigslist?

Here you go. Outlaw Audio has a B-stock LFM-1 Compact at the moment for $349 shipped. It will kick ass and be very good for music. You can't do better for your budget. It might sell out fast, so decide quick.

Here are the specs.

@Mpray1983 & Nosferatu: I'm in VA, so not terribly close by. Sorry!

I've seen a few HSUs that have looked enticing, but other than that, I've narrowed down to the LFM-1 Compact ($350) and ProSub 800 ($320) / ProSub 1000 ($400) based on Cel's recommendations.

From what I've understood (and could very well have misunderstood), the ProSub might sound deeper/more precise, but the LFM would be louder and would go lower.

Every time I feel more inclined to get one than the other, I remember something that makes me indifferent again. Are there any other background/experiences that would help with this decision?

The thing you'll learn if you read around the AVS subwoofer forum long enough is that Internet direct sub retailers like HSU, Outlaw Audio, Rythmik, and Epik make much better subs for the money than the more commonly known brands that you will find that are sold by well-known speaker companies or in brick and mortar stores. ID companies design their own subs and ship direct; no middle man, no marketing costs. They are the manufacturer and thus can sell better subs at lower prices.

Try googling the "ProSub 1000" keyed to the AVS website, and if you start reading through the discussions of the ProSub 1000, you'll eventually find stuff like this:

Meanwhile, here is a comparison of the ProSub 1000 vs the HSU STF-2. The Outlaw LFM-1 Compact is comparable to the next model up HSU, the VTF-1:
