Funny story I gotta tell...:-)

Well first off I was heading too best buy today to address an issue I thought I had with my receiver but it turned out user error. While I was in magnolia today listening to music on the deftech 8060-St towers in stero mode with music there was a guy in his 40's looking at buying speakers. He walked in while I was listening too music on the deftech's and made a comment how good they sounded.I told him I had purchased them a few months back and he started asking questions about them.He was impressed with my knowledge and didn't even talk to the best buy rep much because I was explaining things to him better than the rep...lol

He then listened to some energy towers and liked them but in his words they were too warm.Next he went to BandW's and liked them better than the energy but as I was listening to the deftech's again he commented he liked them much better...he wanted speakers for movies and music but wasn't sure if the deftech's would fit.I'm not sure what he got as I left before he bought but thought it was funny how he was more interested in my knowledge than best buy....he was new to all the A/V stuff and I told him I learned all my knowledge from AVS forum...so I'm sure he will be on the forum soon.Just a funny story I thought I would share...:-)

I like your story, and personally I'd probably do the same thing he did. I'd put a lot more weight on the opinion of another "common man" than I would heed the sales pitch of some guy trying to make a buck off of me.

I'm surprised I haven't gotten banned from BB. I'M ALWAYS IN THERE HELPING OUT. THEY DON'T KNOW JACK IN BB

Yea it's funny with me now as my knowledge has gotten better if I'm in best buy and hear a rep giving bad or weird advice I will sometimes butt in and tell them the truth when the BB rep is being dishonest to try and make a sale...might suck for him but I feel better knowing I gave good advice...:-)

The Best Buy up the road from me is a total joke. I'm surprised the sales people even work on commission and not just minimum wage. They're typically pimple faced teenagers.

At least in your Best Buy you can actually listen to things. At my local store they have everything on display, but nothing is connected. I don't think the employees know how to connect speakers to the receivers. All the TVs are on. I assume they make a lot more money off TV sales.

We got a couple high end Best Buy Magnolias around here that carry B&W Diamonds, Sonus Faber, and other very high end stuff. The rep I spoke with was very knowledgeable and an enthusiast. It was a refreshing experience...

I was in one of the big box electronics retaillers up here in Canada (Future Shop) killing some time once. I was thinking of moving some of my gear around, so I was looking at thier selection of cables. I had cables already, I just was looking for more lenght. A sales rep came along and started hammering me hard on "Monster" cables, said I would see an incredible difference in picture and sound quality over the cables I had already (not knowing what cables I had).

After his sales pitch, I told them I'd give them a try, but if they didn't make a difference in the picture and sound quality as he said they would, I would be returning them the next day. He then said, "Well you won't notice the difference right away, all the molecules in the cable are oriented randomly when they are brand new, and as they get used, the molecules re-orient themselves along the path of the current moving through them, and once this happened THEN you will notice a difference."

I (and the electronics engineer that was with me) burst out laughing. I wonder how many poor unsuspecting people actually buy that kind of lie!

David, I bet that young salesman you talked to will be going places. Sounds like the "quick thinker" working in the grocery store. You know that story?

As a lurker, shopper or saleperson, Best Buy is not the best place for education for audio/video.

I had a friend who thought like you, he's actually worked for Best Buy for a few years now but he truly hates it. Apparently after a few days of genuinely trying to be helpful, the sheer number of clueless people you have to deal with wears you down.

I work in residential and commercial finance and constantly have to deal with borrowers being fed ridiculous information from companies like Quicken. Fact of the matter is, the truth is harder for most to understand and since others lies are based off of their own rational customers tend to believe it as it requires less thinking on their part.

I hate to say it, but I do lose business because of it.
