I just replaced my used onkyo tx-sr606 reciever with this yamaha rx-a3000.I'm running klipsch quintet 5.1 and a klipsch rw-12d 12" sub. What are some tricks about this yamaha to make my surround sound setup sound its best?

You should run YPAO first. You might be able to find some more tips on the A1000/2000/3000 owners thread. That's a whole lot of receiver for the klipsch quintet system. Are you planning on getting new speakers?

Running YPAO, and proper speaker setup are the important steps.

For music, you can try 5 channel stereo. Or DPL II Music mode. Some DSP modes are amusing for some kinds of music. Mostly you may prefer the above mentioned modes.

Straight mode for movies works best, IMO. With rear surround speakers, which I think you lack, then try DPL IIx.

I ran the ypao and cant seem to get it to 5.1 instead it keeps going to 7.1
I'm sure im doing something wrong.I hate to say this.but my onkyo was louder and the bass was way louder and thats going from 90 watts per channel to 140 watts.I'm going to have a computer friend dig threw it and hopefully we can tweak it louder.I also didnt see a subwoofer controler.

You need to go to the dedicated thread and read there for a while. No you don't have it set up correctly. The amps are not assigned properly. You have a 5.1 set up and you left the amps assigned to 7.1 or something else. They have to be changed to 5.0 and YPAO re-ran to detect the sub. As for the volume after running YPAO which will reference to 0 on the settings this AVR will play as loud as your 606 easily. Reference is really loud. This AVR goes from-70 to +16.5 db on its readout. Those speakers and others will be long gone just a little before your hearing. A very capable AVR by anyone's standard. And yes you do need to upgrade those speakers ASAP to really enjoy what it is capable doing. Read the thread, set it up properly, and enjoy it. It is very nice for the money spent on it. Good luck.

YPAO is supposed to automatically detect basic speaker setups like 5.1. Set the Power Amp Assign to the "7ch Normal" setting, the defeault, run YPAO and it should automatically disable the surround back speakers in the speaker settings.
