Yamaha YSTSW012 8" Front-Firing Active Subwoofer, Black
(28-200Hz) frequency response

Son wants this based on the 28-200 frequency response. Is it possible?

Highly unlikely. Your son would be better off with one of the Dayton subs

Thanks.

They also have this
BIC V-80 8" Subwoofer 100 Watts

and the one at Monoprice is inexpensive

as I'm fairly certain Jay1 will tell you, unless the sub is in a 10x10 room with a 6' ceiling, an 8" sub will likely not do much for you.

I would try to go with a 12" or 10" at the very least

+1

8" subs are also usually tuned much higher to protect the driver.

I already have a 10 and a 12 but I'm not gonna give either one to a teenager.

Anybody ever seen or done testing (measurements) on the Yamaha YST-SW216? I am curious because I have one because it's the only thing I can get on the little rock I live on in the middle of the pacific... Without huge shipping costs. I think it would be nice to see, maybe funny. I have played around with it and it seems to do alright, just nothing to compare it with. Would love to hear from someone who has tested it or compared it. Please refrain from "it's a Yamaha sub, it's ****" response please.

Afraid I can't help much with that one. Yamaha isn't known for budget subs, which implies it's probably not the greatest, but the people on Amazon are overwhelming positive about it so who knows. The important part is if you're happy, and it seems as though you are. If your options are limited, due to shipping constraints, then perhaps you chose wisely given the circumstances.

Based on the specs:
- 10" driver
- 100W dynamic
- 25Hz @ -10dB
- 13-3/8" (h) x 13-3/8" (w) x 15-3/16" (d)

...my guess is that it performs about as well as - although it may dig a bit deeper than - the Polk PSW10:
- 10" driver
- 100W dynamic
- 40Hz @ -3dB
- 14 3/8" (h) x 14" (w) x 16 1/8" (d)

...which is to say "modestly":

YMMV, of course.

Feel like doing another review then?

Just kidding, that was a joke!
post #222 of 581
If someone were to ship me a free sub, I would be glad to do a review!

(My wife might not be so glad but, well, you can't please everyone... )

So, is the Sony SA-W2500 discontinued? I can't find it anywhere (except eBay at exorbitant prices).
post #224 of 581
Did a quick Google and, yup, it looks like it's discontinued. Even the Sony Store has it listed as "No Longer Available". You might want to contact Sony just to be sure, though.

The Amazon link in the first post still shows 1 available, so if you were interested in getting it that might be the place to go.
post #226 of 581
FWIW, the Amazon price is $149, which is roughly the same "exorbitant price" they seem to be going for on eBay. (There are, however, a couple of used ones selling for well under $100, shipped.)

That model retailed for $99 and Amazon regularly had them on sale for lower than that. Should have jumped last time it was on sale. I called Sony and they told me that model is in fact discontinued, so that explains why those who are still selling it are charging more than MSRP.

Yeah, I noticed that on the Sony website.

FWIW, when I wrote "exorbitant price", I was just quoting your exact words, and not trying to be sarcastic or to flame you in any way. My apologies if it came across poorly.

Newegg has the Polk PSW505 for $199 with code.

what code gets it to 199? Is it a decent sub? I have a big room 15x35 but viewing area is 15x17...
post #233 of 581
^^^
with a room that size, the 505 would be a good choice but i would spring for 2 if you can.

Jim m not getting traction anywhere, can u help?

Alright, just bought a house and the front 3 speakers are boston acoustic in wall speakers, the rear 2 are in the ceiling. I need to buy a receiver and am looking at the Yamaha RX-671 to power the speakers. As far as a sub this is what i am looking at:

Room Size:
Rectangular Basement finished with heavy padding in carpet, rough size 35'x15'. the 3 speakers are on the 15' side as an fyi and the room is split in half with a wet bar on the far end. Does that make sense?

Price:
Trying to stay under 350

Use:
Mainly tv and movies 80%, Video games 10% and music 10%

I am completely overwhelmed as i have not owned a home theater in a while, last system was powered by a sony reciever and was all yamaha speakers 5.1 with a small 6 3/4 sub and this was like 14 years ago...

I think i need a front firing as i am nervous that a down firing would get muffled in the carpet and padding, i like tight bass that you can feel. Anyhow, i am seeing the deals at new egg for the Klipsch RW 12d, the POLK PSW-505, PA 120... But i am not sure what will work in this room, obviously the entire room is not being used for sitting only about half of it. I am not sure i understand the lower frequency that was talked about when i searched this topic , why does the low end matter so much?

Anyhow i am a newb so be easy, I appreciate any of the help.

Let's begin with your room size, because your options will start there.

Even if you only have 8' ceilings that's 4200 cubic feet, which is not a small space. Unfortunately, even though your viewing area may only be half of that the sub will "see" all of it - physical boundaries are the only thing it really acknowledges. Since the room is large either one monster sub, or two medium sized units, will be needed. For $350 you won't be able to satisfy either of those requirements, so if you can't increase the budget you'll probably have to adjust your needs to match. In essence, "tight bass that you can feel" is not going to be possible. That being said...

In your case it might be better to focus on output (volume) instead of extension (depth). The latter is more difficult to achieve in a larger room then the former is, so I'd suggest you go that route. The Klipsch RD 12d isn't a bad option, given the circumstances, so that's worth looking into. A few other suggestions are:
  • Premier Acoustic PA-150 {use coupon code TV15 for a 15% discount}
  • Acoustic Audio HD-SUB15
  • BIC F12 {a pair of these is just slightly outside your budget}
  • Dayton Audio SUB-1200 {a pair of these is less then your budget}
  • Dayton Audio C1500K {this is an easy to build kit, if you want to go that route}

This is what my 4 budget subs can do in my theater. 25x 13 x 8 with some heavy mid frequency equalization.
Attachment 247344
This is 2 Klipsch RW-12d subs and 2 PL-200 subs.

That's nice and flat. How do those subs sound paired together?
