I can't hear announcers through my center speaker

I ave a Pioneer VSX 820 receiver. I am having a hard time hearing the announcers during NFL games through my center channel. Movies and commercials are fine, but I can't hear the announcers during sporting events because the background noise is so loud. Any ideas on how to improve this?

You need to provide way more info.

1. How many speakers are connected?

2. What source is connected for T V audio? Cable box? Sat box?

3. How is the source connected for audio? HDMI? Optical? Coaxial? Stereo cables?

4. What sound mode are you using?

5. Did you ever calibrate your system ?

My guess is your receiver/ system is not set up properly.

Like afrogt says....my problem is the announcers are too easily heard when they've got little that needs saying!

1. I have a 5.1 speaker set up.
2. DirecTV
3. HDMI
4. I have tried many settings but continue to have this problem. I currently am using the auto setting.
5. I did the calibration a year ago. Should I try it again?

Like I mentioned, all t. Shows, commercials, etc work great. It's just football games that have this problem.

Does your AVR have an adjustment for dialog enhancement (My Pioneer does)? How about increasing the center channel level (or turning down the L/R levels as at least now when I'm watching a game that's where the crowd noise comes from)?

What is showing on your AVR display when you watch football?

Is you directv box set to output Dolby Digital?

1. Click Menu on your Directv remote
2. Go to Parental, Fav's & Setup
3. Select System Setup
4. Select Audio
5. Select Dolby Digital
6. Make sure Dolby Digital is ON.

I've never had a problem with the announcers audio being overwhelmed by surround noises.

Maybe try inceasing the channel level for the center speaker?

I have 3 AVRs and none of them have problem with the center channel dialogue. None are your receiver though.

Check your center channel wiring too just in case.

Doesn't appear you have that option in audio parameters as mine does. Have you tried the "sports" setting in advanced surround features? You could always recalibrate but if everything else sounds fine except NFL games then maybe it's just you have to tweak it a bit for NFL games. I'm watching NFL and the announcers in the center channel are definitely not overcome by crowd noise...maybe the Philly fans just aren't as vocal as usual...

ps Now that Philly's losing...the announcers are even easier to hear But there are 3mins left...

go in the direct TV receivers menu
