I'm considering the 52fd or 53fd as a possible mate for my Pio SC-27 and was wondering if any owners have noticed any fan noise associated with the 52fd? I love my 23fd but occasionally, especially with dialog heavy movies, I can hear the fan running from about 9 ft. away. A minor annoyance, but still a great player.

Actually, the BDP-52FD and BDP-53FD have no fans. The BDP-52FD's disc mechanism might be a little noisy for YOUR taste. I can't speak for the BDP-53FD because the one I just ordered hasn't arived yet. I have a feeling that it might be less noisy.

The way things stand right now, if I had to place a bet on it, I'd bet that the BDP-53FD will convert DSD to PCM at only 88.2 KHz. The reasons I'm getting the player are mainly the disc drive implimentation, the Marvell vp, and the core operation, which I whitnessed when I tried the BDP-52FD. Two HDMI outputs don't guaranty DSD-to-PCM at 176.4 KHz. It didn't really make a difference with the BDP-09FD. I am thinking more along the lines of the BDP-53FD having DSD-to-176.4-KHz-PCM capability because it's Pioneer's current flagship Blu-ray player. However, if I'm wrong, I'll still be keeping the player because of its functionality and disc drive construction.

Yes in store they just added into there inventory yesterday to be able to order it. If you want to order tell them to get the sku through rss and type in the model and will come up.

This likely will not show up on the Best Buy web site. This is a special order SKU only. Also, Pioneer Elite product is typically not able to be transacted on the internet. You can go into any Magnolia location and place an order though. Just ask to speak with a Magnolia specialist.

Just thought I'd pass this along....

Home Theater Magazine will have a Review on the BDP-52 in the upcoming January issue, (early December).

For some on the fence about purchasing one, you may want to wait to read.
From what I understand.... it didn't fare so well.

Just received an email from magnolia regarding the 53... They plan on carrying it but don't expect shipments to hit their warehouse for 4 weeks.

My BDP-53FD arived today. I set it up and played with it. It is the same as the BDP-52FD I returned, adding: Marvell video processing which eliminates the 480i setting, separate HDMI outputs for video and audio with Pure Audio mode, DTS downmix, an extra blue light, and a heavier base plate. SACD output can either be the DSD bitstream or PCM at 88.2 KHz. You need to have the remote aiming precisely at the player. As far as the disc mechanism is conserned, it might be a little quieter than on the BDP-52FD. In case you're wondering, I am keeping this player because of PQLS, the MediaTek MT8555, and the Marvell video processing. Who knows what will be added as firmware updates will be released.

The Pioneer online shop. Because this is an Elite product however, you can't buy it via the internet. So what you'd have to do is phone them at 1-866-214-1310 and they'll ship it to you.

I am thinking about checking out the 53. Not thrilled about how you obtain wireless but still may take a look at it. In any event it can't be any worse than the onkyo 809 recently.

I got it from my local dealer in Toronto. They have 6 units arrived last night. If you need the store info, please PM me.

I still fighting with the network issue with unit. Spent the whole night trying to find out why my the unit freezes from time to time. It turns out that my local network traffic will crash the box. Now I need to find out what type of the traffic actually causes it. I have to disconnect my network device one by one to see.

Wow reading this thread and the other one it seems the first batch from Pioneer has some issues right out of the box. This make me nervous plunking down 500 bucks for something that does not do work properly. I was really hoping these problems were going to be corrected. I don't mind a FW upgrade to solve or enhance the machine but I for one don't want to wait for the correct patch to solve problems, and that may not even work. I love my SC25 and was hoping to match this up with it but looks like I will swing to the Oppo camp, at least tehy are on top of any minor issues that arise and the machines are good to go right out of the box....Very sad

I bought the 52 a few days back, primarily because I wanted SACD & DVD-A playback and to 'match' my SC-25. Interestingly, I've never gotten the PQLS function to work on my receiver. Not with my 23FD player, nor with the 52FD. I've done firmware updates, cable changes, every menu setting combo possible and still nada. RB CDs still never light the indicators up. Honestly, I really doubt PCM with PQLS offers anything tangible over bitstream anyway, so I think I'm giving up on the whole PQLS schtick.

I haven't had any network issues with the 52FD and it seems to bitstream my multi channel HD audio disks just fine. I do find the remote control field pretty narrow.

Still, I am considering just biting the bullet and going Oppo. Since PQLS doesn't function for me, there's little incentive to keeping the Pio beyond matching logos. At least the Oppo adds HDCD decoding, multi channel analog outs (should I ever want to play with them), (likely) better firmware support, overall better build quality, and more features and ports.

Scratch that! Just got off the phone with the direct line (number above) and the woman was a complete b%#%! Guess pioneer does not want the free publicity from a Review. The days of Mr Hagg and Walkamo are long gone. And for the record I was offering to pay too! I was just asking for permission and specs for my site! Just another reason why pioneer blu ray players won't sell well...

Guess I will just focus on my JVC RS55 Review coming...

joe, looks like you & I can finally agree on something
actually, 98% of the time we did agree

Pioneer no longer gives me the woody they used to as a company & their products. My experience holding the bag (as it were) on the SC-09 & watching Oppo put the smack down on their players opened my eyes to the new Pioneer. I don't mean this to be a thread crap so will state my feelings & move on for the benefit of the new owners here.

People who paid up to $7000 for a flagship receiver & not getting any long-term support, people having various issues on brand new players & owners having to replace $400 drives in 2 yr old $2000 players, and snotty phone service are not good ways to keep customers. I've moved on, I suspect you have too. I still have the SC-09 but it pains me to think how Pioneer treated those who put their Ice amps on the map!

On the BDP-23FD, as well as the SC-25, because they were made just before Pioneer dropped their KURO lineup, I believe HDMI Control was called KURO LINK. Have KURO LINK and all its options set to ON or AUTO for both devices. On the BDP-23FD, set HDMI AUDIO to PCM. Better yet, once your TV and SC-25 are turned on, reset your BDP-23FD. Run the Startup Navigater. When the PQLS screen is displayed, select USE. Also, during playback, set the SC-25 remote to control the receiver. Press the STOP button untill the front of the SC-25 says PQLS AUTO. When using it with the new BDP-53FD, set HDMI Control to ON and HDMI AUDIO to PCM. Also, set HDMI MODE to SINGLE if using only one HDMI output, or SEPARATE if using two HDMI outputs. Note that HDMI MAIN should be connected to your TV for video, and HDMI SUB should be connected to your SC-25 for audio. I hope this helps.

On the BDP-23FD, with the player turned on and no disc loaded, while holding the STOP button on the player itself, press the power button. Let go of both buttons. Wait for the player's lights to go out. Turn the player on, wait for the startup navigater, and follow the onscreen directions. On the BDP-53FD, go to Initial Settings>Options>Load Defaults.
