Photocell sensors for light sockets, is it really worth it?

Just found this:
amazon.ca/Light-Socket-Photocell-White-Misc/dp/B000HOSZNS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317803520&sr=8-1

I'm considering to buy it, but i am wondering if it will save electricity

i have read that in the product description of a similar product:
Quote:

Woods 59404 Photocell Light Sensor Socket Switch. Make your life easier with photocell automation. It automatically turns your lights on at night. Simply turn off your light and carefully remove the bulb. Screw the photocell into the light socket! There is no wiring required. Screw the bulb into the new photocell socket, and turn the light on. When it becomes dark, the photocell will turn on the bulb and the cycle begins. The light switch must be in the on position for the socket to work. and this is not meant for use with dimmers. recommended maximum usage is 100Watt light bulbs. This indoor light control will add simplicity.

So this means that my light switch will always be ON, does that means it will consume power even when the light is off, and if the answer is yes is there a "standy mode" that will consume less power or it will consume the same power than if the light was on ?

Also, does anyone tryed these products ? is it reliable or the light will turn on even when it's not dark, or vice versa ?

thanks!

If the switch that controls this particular light socket is not connected to any other device that is drawing power, then it will draw only a trivial amount of current. Nothing to be concerned with.

What concerns me about this description you post, is that it is recommending it used for indoors.
In an indoor environment, other lights could be on, which will be sensed by this socket, causing it to turn off.

I suppose if you use one in an isolated location without any other lights, and can rely on window day light to trigger the sensor I suppose it can be used indoors.

What these really are good for are like the front porch where it is exposed to the day time light and switch the bulb off reliably.

Well it will, to the fact that you will never need to forget to turn it off and let it burning all day.

If u REALLY want it to save energy though, find one that can take a compact fluorescent.

And/or: Does it need to be on at all time at dusk? There is no other lightings in the surrounding? U maybe able to find a proximity sensor instead, so ONLY when people approaching does it turn on. That will save u even more.

Maybe that would be a better idea, but i have a cat and i don't want the light to be turned on because the cat is walking around

This conversation is going nowhere until u disclose what's the intended application.
