UPS Delivers Damaged Box (YSP-2200)

After weeks of reading online reviews I finally decided to take the plunge and purchased my first sound system, the YSP-2200. When I arrived home from work yesterday the box was waiting for me! I brought the 32 lb box inside the house and noticed some damage to the box. There was some sort of impact along the bottom edge of the box which actually tore a hole 2-3 inches long. I can probably squeeze a couple of fingers inside. And on the back of the box there is a straight-line dent about 4 inches long. It was enough to crack the white cardboard surface but it did not break through to the inside like the one on the front. I have not opened the box. I would like to ask members who have purchased this type of speaker system to tell me whether or not these sound projectors are manufactured and packaged well enough to withstand the hazards of some rough handling and even box damage, or if it would be in my best interest to request a reshipment and ask the company to pack the Yamaha box inside of another box. By the way, there is a clear "Fragile - Handle With Care" label on the top of the box. I immediately took a couple of photos and emailed them to the company where I purchased it. I am waiting to hear back from them. Thank you for your input.

Try it out and see if it is working. As long as there was no damage to the unit itself it should be fine.

I agree. The box of my VSB200 that came from Amazon via UPS looked like it was stepped on by an elephant and thanks to the thick foams, the SB had no damages or scratches. From my shipping experiences with UPS, I knew UPS doesn't care about the Fragile and Handle with Care labels.

Thanks. I emailed Yamaha and explained the situation to them. The rep said that anything electronic that is bounced around that roughly is potentially not good, but that I would need to test it out to be sure. He did say that if I wasn't comfortable with that situation then I should be able to work out an exchange with the dealer.

I am far from being an audiophile so I'm wondering if a problem that might have occurred during shipping would be obvious to my ears. (Is this item performing exactly as it should?)

Am I making too big a deal out of this or are my concerns legit? If an issue arises one month or six months from now there will always be the possibility hanging over my head that it originated with the impacts during shipping.

The vendor just emailed me back and said they would be happy to exchange the YSP-2200 for another one. However, I would have to pay to send the 32lb oversized box back to them until they can confirm that it is indeed damaged. Great. This was a MAJOR purchase for me that I was excited about, and now it's turning into a rather unpleasant mess.

I wanted to post a follow-up. After emailing the vendor back again and requesting the name and contact information of a manager, I received a reply asking me to open the box and to check for damage. If there is visual damage they would file a claim with UPS. If there was no damage they would, as a one-time courtesy, let me return the item at no cost to me and send me a new one. Needless to say, I was very grateful for their solution and asked that the new item be packed inside another box to prevent a repeat of the original shipment.

Read UPS's tariffs. Doesn't mean a thing to them.

The company is now refusing to pack the replacement box inside another box. They just say they cannot do it. I then requested contact information for the president and CEO of the company and am now waiting for a response. I contacted another online A/V dealer and they said that although they do ship the YSP-2200 in the manufacturer's box they would honor my request to pack it inside another box should I choose to order one from them.

I think you're making too big a deal out of this. Items are usually well packed in styrofoam or other padding and are protected from superficial box damage.

If there is no damage to the speaker, what's the big deal? Are you going to display the shipping box, or just throw it away?
