Denon DNP-720AE DAC vs MF V-DAC

Thread Starter
Just got my hands on the new Denon streamer DNP-720AE to pair my Arcam pre/pro and Klipsch RF83 floorstanders. Up until now i was using VDAC with my Olive No2 streamer witch gave me a pretty nice sq, i was wondering if the 500$ worth newly launched Denon streamer's DACs are superior to the 150$ VDAC in terms of specs and sq.I know this is subjective and an A/B test will show but i haven't found anywhere details on the Denon DACs type/chipset, so to knopw what to expect for.

Thanks,

Nick

Hi,
I want to ask, does Denon 720 plays FLAC from USB stick or from a USB players only?

I have no iPod. I want to listen FLACs from USB storage only.

Thank you.

can you use the 720AE like a DAC? Are you using a NAS hows the experience

You can play FLAC format from a USB stick directly plugged into the Denon dnp-720ae. You can't use the player as an independent DAC. Try the sibling Marantz NA7004 for that.

I too have looked for details of the Denon's internal DACs, but have unearthed nothing.

What I can say is that whatever components are in use, and I suspect they are of the BURR-BROWN variety, they are impressive, as is the dnp-720ae in most other respects.

I originally had the machine bypassing its internal DAC circuitry to feed an off board Arcam rDAC through an optical connection, but after some running in, was so impressed with its native sound that I decided to unleash the player and exploit it's own built in DACs. This works for me as I wanted to tame my KEF XQ30's slight brightness and experience more of that familiar, warm Denon sound. I am also using a high end Denon AV receiver which adds to that warmth. I can't testify that similar results will be had in other set ups, and remember the rDAC really comes into its stride when connected from to a computer using its USB connection; but pound for pound, you get a great sound from the Denon and would need to go some way up the DAC scale to improve on things.

The rDAC was sold in under 6 minutes on eBay.

How does it perform with 96/24 wav/flac files?

I'd been considering a Squeezebox Touch, but been turned off by what I'd read of it's performance when directly connected to a USB flash/hard drive.

If anyone can compare to Squeezebox Touch performance and audio quality, that would be interesting.

Hi,
yesterday I bought this Denon. Very nice display!

I have an interesting experience: Denon played FLAC files from USB properly. But it does not play the same FLAC from the PC. From computer it plays only MP3 files. Interesting.

I have PC (Win 7, 64bit) which is connected wirelessly with the Denon.

Please, tell me how to play FLAC files from PC.

Thanks.

Download DLNA compliant server software which is flac compatible....Twonky or Tversity....WMP does not have native flac streaming capability.

Twonky does play Flac files. It did it for me (I ran Linux version though). It simply needs external decoder tool for that. But everything is explained in configuration instructions.
