My first house...my first entertainment area.

Hello everyone,

I have been lurking the forums lately checking reviews on receivers and speakers. So I have just bought my first house and the basement is already finished. Below you will find a layout of the area of the entertainment space.

The speaker icons show where he currently has speakers set up. The wires are coming out of the finished walls and ceiling(not a drop ceiling). There is center channel and a subwoofer as well. He also has a projector and a screen along the 9ft wall. However none of that stuff is staying so I will be left with an empty space and dangling speaker wire.

I am going to be placing my 50" plasma along the 9ft wall and keeping the locations of the current speakers. I may not use the one in the middle coming out of the ceiling and just doing a 5.1 system. I have a sectional that will be the main sitting area for that space.

I guess why I'm posting is that, I am just looking for advice on equipment (budget of approx $1500 CAD), any ideas/suggestions, any tips/pointers, things to look out for, concerns, etc...

Stuff I will have hooked up is a PS3 and a HD PVR. I use my PS3 for everything.

Thanks

Hey there and welcome to the madness. It would actually help us to see a actual photo or two of the space as well as the drawing.

Why not go with a PJ instead of the 50" TV? If budget is a concern there are plenty of reasonably priced PJ's. That is what direction I would go. Depending on what you wanted you could also look into the Onkyo HTiB's they are a good bang for your buck if your budget is limited.

Good luck.

Well a projector may happen down the road. The mount and wires are already in the ceiling too. The 50" Plasma is just what I currently have. My budget as of right now is $1500CAD. I went out looking yesterday and I think I am leaning towards the RX-V line of Yamaha. I got quoted a RX-V371 and a Cerwin Vega CMX 5.1 speaker package for $1350CAD. Below is a picture of the room standing from the bar area. The rear speakers are just cutoff in the picture. None of that stuff is mine.

I was even thinking that I should just start with a receiver and 2 tower speakers.

Sometimes it is better to spend the money on two really nice tower speakers vs. a surround system. Just depends on what you are going to do. If you watch mostly movies then no, but if you do a lot of music listening then yes. Yamaha makes some nice AVR as well probably can't go wrong there. I don't have any experience with the Cerwin Vega system. Looks like you have a very nice space to work with in the future though.

Good luck.
