Subwoofer for AV Receiver.

Hi Guys,

I am setting up my first ever hometheater. After much of thinking between Denon AVR1912 and Onkyo TX NR 609, I have finally decided to go for Onkyo. Now I am planning my subwoofer.

I already have a 10 inch Pioneer Subwoofer in a custom box. Is there a amplifier other than the car subwoofer amplifiers to amplify the subwoofer preout? or is therer a way to actually hook up the car subwoofer amplifiers to AV Receiver. is it safe.

Is the powered subwoofer the only option

Sorry for very blunt question. After much of searching i finally gave up and decided to ask the AVS for help.

If you're sold on Onkyo ... upgrade to the 709 as the version of Audyssey (2EQ) in the 609 cannot EQ the subwoofer.

I assume the car sub doesn't have speaker level ins, so more than likely you will need an external amp. I wouldn't recommend using a car amp for HT applications. There is no way to get power to it and I am sure that there would be voltage/amperage issues if you could get power to it.

For home audio most subwoofers have a plate amp built into the back like this model.

If you can't cut a hole in the box that size they do have similar specs in stand alone amps for slightly more $$$. You can use a car amp if you have a 12 volt power supply. Try to avoid this solution.

You need an external amp, and if you are going to spend money, may as well go with a real amp instead of a car amp and spend more$ on a beefy 12V power supply and have it sux up 1/2 of the power right on top.

If this is car sub, most likely is a 4ohms, so your amp better can handle 4 ohms.

And u thought this was going to be simple!

Can I buy Denon AVR 1912 which has multi EQ? I hear from the reviews that sound quality is better. If this is true is it because of the multi eq? or is it worth buying Denon AVR 1912 giving up the features Onkyo provides.

The MultEQ in the 1912 will EQ the subwoofer and likely provide better audio fidelity. Decide which is the priority ..... features (Onkyo) or better audio fidelity (Denon). Although for not much more you can get the Denon 2112CI which upgrades to the same Audyssey MultEQ XT as the 709. Give AV Science or Electronics Expo a call and ask for their best price on both models.
