If I was using an Xbox which was not connected to an AV system with a PC, I can see where it might be of some use.

Mostly I'm not going to watch video on a console. I used to complain about the noise; my launch-model 60GB PS3 is still pretty noisy, but not my Xbox S. Now, all of the stuff that you can watch on the Xbox that I'm interested in (other than Zune Video) can be played on other equipment that I have which draws less than 10% of the power of even the Xbox Slim (the Roku 2 XS draws about 2 watts and is the most capable Netflix player that I own, with 1080p video, bitstreamed DD+ 5.1 sound and closed caption/soft subtitle support.

The chatpad takes that billon times easier out of the equation . I have a slim on the same display(Samsung 46" LED 7000) as my computer and video seems similar on both as well. Having a chatpad for my other slims away from the computer brings that advantage for all the other rooms with Slims on them. Because everyone in my household enjoys using Youtube and now don't have to get on their computers and enjoy it from their couch like they do with Netflix and Hulu +.

At the very least its in HD. If anything its the apps that are still only playing SD content that are garbage.

Also, for those interested in the black level bug that has been reported. Someone from Microsoft finally replied in one of the bug report feedback threads:

Thanks for the feedback! Though we will not be able to incorporate your feedback into this release we will save it for consideration in future releases.

Thanks for using the new Xbox Update and please keep up the feedback!

I'm not claiming that its worthless, just worthless for me . It seems like a decent app, as far as that goes. I did say, "If I was using an Xbox which was not connected to an AV system with a PC, I can see where it might be of some use".

My housemate/landlord has just been tossed by his girlfriend so I expect that his Xbox (a Jasper Elite that I sold him after buying my Slim+Kinect bundle) will be returning to the living room soon. Perhaps he'll use the YouTube app .

So I just downloaded the Verizon app and the channel listing is perfect for my daughter's room because there is no cable box in there. But when I try to watch movies on hbo or Cinemax it tells me that I'm not subscribed to those channels. I know I am because my hbo go and maxgo work on my computers and iPad. Anybody have any issues with this? And I do have fios Internet (35 up and down) as well.

Anyone else having problems with the Zune marketplace? Trying to watch the 10 minute free Rise of the planet of the apes and it keeps downloading the app when I select it.

I had problems with the Zune apps. When I was in the storage section, it showed the old copy of Zune as well as the new copy and the update to the old Zune.

I went to the hard drive and deleted anything Zune and redownloaded the new version of Zune to be able to load it. Then Zune music and video worked properly. To me, it seems that the new Zune would download but not erase the old Zune.

That feedback is unacceptable...they need to fix it right away as it's basic video levels that should not have been messed up.

I see the issue also effects the Youtube videos. At least that's what I see...no real blacks in the video like the brightness level has been boosted. Once the video is over, good black levels return.

Some good news from the guys at Digital Foundry/Eurogamer

Hi,

Thanks for the message.
I am actually looking into this now.

I put the Skyrim timelapse we produced onto a USB drive and grabbed it via the 360, and then extracted the same frame from the original file. I put these files into Photoshop and used Levels to bring up a histogram for both images (attached).

As you can see, the entire colour range has been compressed. Blacks are indeed no longer black and the darkest colour does seem to be around RGB level 235, which would suggest limited range RGB being implemented. However, there is still information in the 0-16 range, which we should not be seeing.

We get different colour shifts depending on whether limited, intermediate or expanded levels are set. The same file played on PS3 looks nothing like any of them!

I'll post something about it when I've done a more thorough analysis, but yes, it's clearly borked.

Cheers,

Why is that good news? Everyone already knows it is screwed up. We need a fix not someone telling us what we already know. Just saying...

Its good news because they have a well earned reputation for knowing wtf they're talking about when it comes to this sort of thing. Their writing an article about it will create the kind of exposure needed to expedite a fix, especially if the blogs start linking to it.

Hmm hopefully so but I doubt it will have much pull.

Because its bad PR having an article like that out there? Not everyone knows that its screwed up as many gamers don't calibrate their TVs and are blissfully unaware when it comes to this type of thing. They just leave their sets in the torch/VIVID modes and think that looks good...so its unlikely they would notice something like this unless someone with some "authority" writes about it. Its a step in the right direction in getting more people aware of the problem. Once one site starts reporting on it...hopefully it will create a domino effect.

David Katzmaier (HDTV senior editor at cNET) also replied to my e-mail this morning stating that he would look into it.

Has anyone had any sound issues with the update? I've had a couple of instances where the sound on the dashboard has dropped out and carried over into a game or movie. Once I restart the xbox or reload the dash, it fixes itself but still...

I had a similar issue on my LED in the bedroom. I had to drop my resolution from 1080p to 1080i and the sound never cut out. Haven't really bothered to check as to why this happens.

This is great news henhowc thanks so much for pursuing this and getting attention from the Digital Foundry guys (not to mention cNET). Once Eurogamer posts an article about this, it will be picked up by all the blogs guaranteed. I have no doubt we'll see it on The Verge and Engadget, and from there it's only a matter of time until it's fixed.

This is exactly what we needed. I sent a note about it to Digital Foundry myself but did not get a response. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Trust me it will get major attention. Digital Foundry articles are always widely linked when they find significant issues like this (for example when it was discovered that Halo 3 is not truly rendering at HD resolution). And honestly this is such a glaring, massive bug! It boggles my mind that people aren't bothered by it, or don't see it, or even worse, actually do see it but don't care. Once DF posts the article, no doubt with screenshots, videos, graphs...hard evidence...it will absolutely draw tons of attention and force Microsoft to acknowledge and fix.

And here I was under the impression that it was general Microsoft policy to deny, deny, deny, then claim that it was an "intended enhancement". Sort of like how each version of Windows Media Player is less capable of actually playing different types of media than the version before; Microsoft claims this is for stability, or for the sake of standards, or whatever, but it amounts to a loss of functionality.

Ahem, sorry. I do appreciate all the hard work they do on the dashboard, but major unexplained breakage is never welcome. I'm honestly surprised that the color space wound up re-broken considering all the attention this area received some time back when the "Standard", "Intermediate" and "Expanded" options were added to try and appease gamers with different display requirements.

Please let us know when the Digital Foundry and cNET articles come out.

Personally, I can't wait for Microsoft to fix the problem. All the Youtube videos on my calibrated Kuro Elite look washed out and appear to have low contrast and washed out colors (an effect of boosted black levels.)

It's very nice to have some good entertainment through the Youtube app in the 1080 resolution format, however right now it simply looks bad through the Xbox 360.

THANK YOU henhowc!
Hopefully CNet and DF can make Microsoft move a little quicker than their typical glacial pace.

This Ref. Level glitch really drives my nuts. I just bought a new PDP too and calibrated it and one week later I get this bogus Dashboard update.

Are there any short term work-arounds? Does forcing a specific HDMI Color Space or Reference Level help at all?

i also noticed that the new dash is kindda Jerky when pressing the Xbox button to bring up the xbox dashboard and moving the tabs left to right, its like tearing very slightly.. seems like they released a buggy dash afterall..

Love the Digital Foundry Headline:

Nothing on CNet yet.

It looks good for HD content. SD content is obviously going to look like crap when blown up to the size of your average TV. I wish it acted like the web where you can select the quality of your video playback. I wouldn't mind waiting a little longer for the pre-buffering to avoid any SD playback.

Have you thought about replacing your HDMI cable with one which is certified for "high speed" (category 2) operation? As it turns out, the original category 1 cables are rated for 720p60 and 1080i60, but not for 1080p60; you need a category 2 cable for this. While a lesser cable may indeed work most of the time, it's possible to suffer periodic issues when using it. So this may be one of the rare cases where a better cable actually makes a difference.

You don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a nice cable, either. Monoprice has very nice cables available for less than $10. Example:

I think it defaults to the highest resolution possible. I don't have a problem with that.

I'm also under the impression, if your internet speed cannot handle higher resolutions, the quality is automatically adjusted down.

Oh and besides the above comment, I have to say the Youtube HD videos look really good. And, I know they can look a LOT better when they fix the black issue!
