Use this on any machines you have sleep issues with, and make sure you only use S3 sleep.

Does your W7 sleep based on WMC or somewhere inside W7 or a BIOS setting?
Is it natural for the Xbox to waken the W7 or is there a "setting" somewhere?
I would guess that a movement on the MC Remote will also waken the PC?

You can configure how your PC goes into sleep in Power Options of Control panel.

Xbox automatically issue magic packet when it can't contact the host PC.

You don't have to leave WMC open on the PC. In fact, you don't even need to login to the host PC. As long as it is on, it will serve extenders just fine. If you leave desktop WMC on, your PC won't go into sleep unless you want to install some 3rd party plugins. You can do what ever you normally do on the desktop without affect the Xbox functionality.

Xbox 360 works great as a media center extender. All recorded TV shows are available, as is the guide and live TV.

The problem I'm having is watching a recording that was made on my living room HTPC on my bedroom PC. I get a copy protection error.

Quite annoying!

Makes me want to buy more 360s or maybe the Ceton extender.
That's exactly why I don't use multiple PC setups. Xbox 360 is actually a cheaper solution consider a typical PC costs way more than Xbox 360 and can't share the recordings.

Hi, I have a HomeRun Prime on the way and was curious about this. So a 360 can view ALL live tv and ALL recordings correct? When it's said that a PC can't view some programming does that include other PC's with windows 7 media center? Or is this referring to other systems. I'm confused as to why one windows 7 pc would be able to view a program and another couldn't. Thanks smile.gif
post #1146 of 1465
This only applies to content that is marked as copy once. All other RecordedTV can be shared between PC's as media using shared drives or even a file server.

Copy once material can only be viewed on the PC that recorded it or an extender that is paired with that PC. The Xbox is one such extender. The echo is another. There's also Linksys and HP extenders but they are not in current development or support.

OK thanks. I guess my question is why couldn't a windows 7 PC be used as an extender?
Because of DRM. If you can share it on any PC you can distribute content anywhere digitally.
Oh I see. But I could then just use another windows PC to watch live or record that same show on a different tuner right?

Yes.

Yes, but the two PCs don't communicate with one another about tuner availability. THe prime has 3 tuners, but each PC will let you use all 3. Only when it comes time to record will one PC 'win' and the other 'lose'.

So you'll need to be careful, obviously, when recording from two separate PCs.

Media Center Hardware

I plan on using a Dell Latitude E6400 Laptop as the main Media Center PC.
It has Intel Core Duo CPU T9550 @2.66GHz and 8 GB of RAM
I plan on connecting 1 or 2 Xbox on Gig Bit network.
No plans for recording, just TV viewing.
Would this be sufficient?

Thanks
I think that will work. Does the version of wndows on there have WMC? The biggest issue will be the buffer on the HDD not being enough for LiveTV.
Yes, Windows 7 Enterprise with WMC. Anything that can be done about the buffer? How much resources would it need. What is the bottleneck?

Not a bottleneck so to speak just that it is wear on your boot drive in a laptop. If you can get and use an external drive that would be better..

Thanks for the response. Just got my Prime and can't wait to get home. Another question I just thought of. Can you use a NAS for recording your shows with HDHomeRun Prime? And if you can is there some sort of signature for which PC actually recorded that show? Was just wondering if a NAS could be a workaround with copy once programming.

Edit: In skimming through this thread it looks like you can use a NAS but it's a pain. Maybe I'll mess around with it once I've got the system working well.

You cannot get around the copy once flag with NAS as the DRM is tied to the hardware of the machine that originally recorded the content.

So I got my prime setup and I'm blown away with how well this is working with Windows Media Center. It was relatively simple to setup, only issue I had was while the HDMI cable I was using worked fine for video it was having an issue with (I forget the 4 letters) the digital protocol HDMI uses to make sure you're not stealing. So, I am now ready to start venturing to other machines and was looking for advice.

I have a Winows 8 machine that doesn't have media center on it. When I set up the HDHomerun software on it, it scans all of the channels but using the quick tv app it comes with I'm only able to get basic channels. My question is are there any other programs I can use that I'll be able to get more encrypted channels? I'm a little confused on what channels are encrypted and what are copy protected. In other words, if I can't see it in the quick tv program does that mean I'm not going to be able to see them no matter what program I use? If a program will decrypt more stations what would you recommend? I attempted to set up Sage, but it doesn't seem to recognize the prime.

I also have a PS3 I'm looking into setting up using the project connect. Does anyone have any experience with that? Everything is working so well that I'm a little apprehensive about installing beta software.

Thanks for your time smile.gif

HDCP.

The HDHR Quick TV app will not play TV content with the copy once flag. You need WMC for that. Get a copy of WMC for the OS on the laptop or change it to Win7 with WMC. The second option might be cheaper depending on which version of Win8 is on the laptop.

There's a whole forum for Project Connect on Silicon Dust's website.
Yup! HDCP that was it. Drove me crazy. I had read some other forums where minimizing and maximizing the screen would fix it... did that about 347 times before giving up. Brand new HDMI cable too, oh well it happens.

When you say get a copy of WMC for the OS I'm working on, is there a way to get WMC without getting the windows version it came with? For instance I just built a Windows 8 machine and paid full pop for Windows. I didn't know that I had to get the pro version in order to get WMC frown.gif Now they want another $100 to upgrade then I have to buy WMC. Not going to do it. Is there another way to do this?

On a separate note, I got a 360 slim on CL for $100 yesterday and it works flawlessly... well almost. I'm using powerline adapters and I have some rare network issues but they're manageable. Thanks for the help.
Too bad you didn't follow along earlier because a couple months ago you could have got Win8 with WMC for $50 or something. Now it is only available as an add on to Pro for $10 so you have to upgrade to pro and then add in WMC.

Right now you can get Win7 with WMC for $87 with a code, $99 otherwise from newegg.

I think you need to adjust settings in you video driver to fix the HDCP issue. It should be in the scan settings.

So are you guys happy with your product. I am in the middle trying to purchase a tuner to replace my DVR Boxes. I purchased a similar question on the other major TV tuner forum. So would you buy your product again?

I must say that I am a little disappointed that HDPrime can only record 3 shows at once, but I am also glad to see that this forum has sooo many less posts about their product than the other guys. While my assumption may be incorrect, to me it shows that the prime MIGHT be a more reliable system.
I'm very happy with the Prime. Silicon Dust has it's own forum full of people trying to solve problems so don't go by the number of forum posts here.

I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely do it again. Just a minor correction, the HDHR doesn't record anything, it just makes tuners available on the network. If you want to record more shows at once, you just need to buy additional devices to have more tuners available.

Although I can't really comprehend needing to record more than 3 shows at once, I guess I just don't watch THAT much TV. :-)

A lot more Prime support is funneled into their actual forum site, and Ceton has more frequent presence in this particular forum which leads to more posts for that reason as well. Also, the InfiniTV thread started before the thing was even released, and that was still a year before the prime was released

I feel like currently they are both well supported and have a lot of users here. Some of us use them daily without issues and never comment. I've never had a problem with the Prime. I'd probably never have had any problems with the InfiniTV. I try a lot of software and that is usually where problems come up, nothing typically is wrong with the tuner. I like the networked box over a USB or PCI tuner. I've used the prime's tuners on a SU4100 W7 laptop, main i5 server/htpc, g630 OpenELEC box, i3 W7/OpenELEC box, and Nexus 7. I probably wouldn't have attempted this with a PCI tuner. I don't believe Ceton allows you to access a pool of tuners (I've not read up on it recently), so you have to bridge your tuners to different setups

Pick whatever suits your particular needs the best

If I had it to do over again, I'd still buy the Prime (I would also avoid paying retail, the same way I do with almost everything)

In my experience so far 3 shows at once is generally enough. You can always buy a second one if you want six at once though. I've only been using mine for a few days now, but I'm blown away by how well it's worked. I was pretty nervous about it going into it because of all the posts with people having issues, but I didn't have any other than a bad hdmi cable and you can't blame that on the device. I've already set up a 360 extender and that went flawlessly. The only thing I would say is to make sure at minimum you have a powerline adapter for your network connection (my experience at least). I have good dual channel wireless N in my apartment and I was having network issues. I didn't want to run ethernet so I got a powerline adapter. It's not perfect, I get network issues but very infrequently. I've had 2 in as many days with pretty heavy use.
Well I currently have 2 DVR both can record 2 shows at once. With a wife and 2 boys or between Oprah and Naruto Shitpudden he he..... the 4th tuner would not be a luxury but a necessity.
So get two Primes to replace your two DVR's and then you'll have six tuners?

That's what we did. We save about $50/mo on equipment and have a WAY better experience to boot.
Not only will you be able to record six shows at once, you'll be able to watch TV on any computer on your network that has WMC installed/enabled.

You will need tuner salad to get beyond the 4 tuner limitation of WMC, BTW.
