Guys, lets not act like WMC is a "finished" product or not deserving of more developer love. The thing is buggy and quirky as hell. The fact that you need to add to your registry to even get it to spit out the correct black levels is proof enough. Numerous times now I've had to re-run the entire WMC setup because it can't work out getting new guide data on it's own.
It is definitely troubling that they're not actively improving it as we speak. If it wasn't high enough of a priority to update with Win 8, when will it be?
I haven't had to do any of those things. Maybe hacking the registry is the root of your problems? Madshi has a 0-255 registry adjustment tool. I have used it and all is well with WMC for me. It is reliable and I use it every single day without issue. It could use some minor refinements to the PVR such as PIP preview while surfing and utilizing two tuners for LiveTV buffer when swapping between channels but it gets the job done and the $28 it saves me each month is well worth some of its minor drawbacks.
