You can judge ambient light rejection, yes it's still a crap shoot but IMO it's a lot easier to see how well a PJ does with ambient light than trying to analyze it's detail/color (because that could be severely off with static pictures).

Look at my sim2 video here (14.5 ft wide and 15ft diagonal I think) - at the end I turn all lights on, it's ambient light is pretty horrid. I remember having the Epson 8100 in there and it was watchable during the day.



Yes this was taking with an iphone, so the video quality is poor (motion blur, too), but you can see the problems in ambient light.

I bet I could make my PJ look good with one of those stills! ....even with a video. If you shoot a 480p video and put the image in full screen, you could make a 480 PJ look good!

It's funny, bc "lay" people that come into my theater say what a great image my PJ puts out @135" and I bet I only have 400 lumens and 15000:1 contrast ratio. Mind you, I also have a bat cave and that makes a BIG difference compared to the white walled room I had before. If I show them the flaws or was able to demo another PJ at the same time they would see the difference.

Looking forward to everyone's impressions on the 3010. I'm still wondering if the 5010 or the RS45 will be worth the extra expense....since I would also need to get 3d glasses for those.

sprocket - what are your thoughts on the IR 3D? OPtoma's RF 3D glasses are sure to trump the IR technology, but what has your experience been with Epsons?

No! I've watched all these movies on a 3D DLP projector and have yet to see any crosstalk. It's the high contrast scenes that have given LCD and LcOS all kinds of problems in the past with respect to crosstalk. The question is -- have the new LCD and LcOS projectors improved enough that crosstalk has been virtually eliminated? If crosstalk was a source problem then no improvements to the display would solve it. Improvements are being made, but have enough improvements been made so that the 2012 projectors are crosstalk free?

Give me a movie to try and I'll tell my honest opinion. The german translated preview of the 5010 said the 480hz panels have helped reduce crosstalk and ghosting.

You see, that right there is my problem. The review describes the technology and when you look at it, there should be no way there can be crosstalk. Yet they say reduced crosstalk instead of eliminated which this tech should do. I mean looking at it there should be no way the left eye can see an image intended for the right eye if I understood it correctly so that leaves me thinking it may be in the glasses and settings. I just don't know and that makes me hesitant.

it's translated from german, the title says it reduces crosstalk, and the end of the paragraph says (after a mathematical explanation on 480hz) - crosstalk has been "banished".

The "utah" place is epson's largest dealer in USA. Projector People ships direclty from Epson who are producing more batches, Epson themselves only had a small stock on hand and sprocket got it.

The box has already shipped and is tracking for thursday. Others have it tracked for Tuesday. The guy who mentioned the store is tracking for tomorrow.

Visualapex has demo posted here and they were shipping this week. Projectorpeople were shipping last week and customers started receiving them this week (confirmed by those 2 stores) .... performance ? a buddy of mine saw the demo at Cedia last month and confirmed how good the picture quality is, so I placed the order. UPS confirmed delivery for me by Oct18. lets see what happens .....

I was a bit dubious too, but this is a large (10-store) chain that's had excellent customer reviews for 5+ years. They've been in Utah papers several times- not all good, since they had a several-month-long bout with bankruptcy in 2009 (their major investor at the time was circuit city... oops...) before recovering when one of their partners put in a huge investment. You can view their storefront in google maps and their showroom in their commercials. Even after seeng that I was thinking maybe they were stretching the definition of "in stock", but *SOMETHING* is shipping to me via UPS with a delivery date of the 20th, per UPS tracking number.

Obviously they could be shipping me a box of rocks, but I don't think it's likely... We'll see.

Having said that, I do agree that it sucks some of the other dealers didn't get stock and this place did, but it's unfortunate reality - when projector people said they had stock I started stripping out my install. Now, I need something to put in asap or I'll have to live with a hole in my ceiling. If this place is the only place that has it in stock, it's unfortunate reality that I must take advantage of that.

it could be a box of rocks because it was shipped within 30 minutes. i mean i'd run to the UPS store if you gave me 1.6K from out of state.

does your box of rocks wiegh 20 lbs? UPS says mine does, har. probably 3 or 4 of them in there with padding so it doesn't shake in transit

Glad you have it that way because I do not. I do not have a lot of spare cash to toss about in these times. One must be prudent especially when one has a family. I still wish you good fortune with the new unit. That was all I was saying. A single guy can do this much better and I look forward to your obsrvations. BTW, you are right, you will never be rich because you spend your money. Go ahead and get the HD3300 and compare them side by side. It's only 1.5k+ whatever and you got it right??? You can always flip that hardware. I mean it is only 3k plus some little bit total, a mere drop in the bucket compared to your other PJ. Nothing to cry about right? Well if you really want me to, the only problem is nobody on AVS would buy it if I had both and wanted to get rid of the 3300 after a review.

Actually this whole year I didn't spend a dime on anything non-necessity, and it reached October and thought gee maybe it's time I buy a toy.

Now if I have a family, that would be different. But I see no use of holding onto inordinate amount of money for "insurance" purposes. I reach a point in savings and spend the rest. It takes discipline. I understand the family situation because I see it happen all around me, although my coworker has 7 kids and still buys and plays every game under the sun. I seem to purchase 1 game every 6 months, in comparison, I've saved that money to spend on a bigger item.

Maybe the guy with the corvette living in a bungalow isn't as happy as the guy living in a mansion driving a 20 year old civic eating in everyday to save money. I don't know. I'm not going to judge anyone, I'm just telling you what I know is true. If you buy a 1.5K projector and flip it 1 week later saying it doesn't jive with you but works perfectly, you could lose only $50. Many times you can actually make the same amount or more because consumers don't know about AVS.

Local audio video specialists normally give you a 30 day money back guarantee also. I'm not the first to suggest trying 2 projectors from a place you can return one of them for no penalty. Remember back in the days of "TVs" (lol) there were fools who bought multiple TVs to find out what worked best in their house (think how fun it is to return those!).

I don't like living "what if", what if that projector is better! I have analysis paralysis. I have to trust reviews or my own eyes. It's a headache to watch the CC bill to make sure something gets refunded promptly of course.

I like the under 3K forum because bang for the buck hardware is over here, too many diminishing returns with electronics

This is not the poor forum just like the >$3000 is not the rich forum. However ellmaloc wants to spend his money is fine with me. Actually, a lot of us would really like ellmaloc's direct comparison of all 3 PJs!

...and I agree, it is all about priorities. I've brought over a bunch of toys for needy families and wondered why they need them when they have a bigger TV than mine! I agree. Also the above 20K forum people are not necessarily rich either - they like to talk about their corvettes/cars more than this forum where we stay on topic for the most part (LOL) - and their 20K equipment is MSRP. Many times they're still talking about equipment under 10K - and often times wondering why their equipment is better or not than the stuff hovering around in this forum. Also their used equipment can hit 5-6K pretty quickly because of technology advancements.

There are some millionaires that hover on AVS though and you can see it in some of their dedicated builds. There are people like us who won't spend more than 10K on a theater (all equipment and room included) - then there are people hovering around in the 40-50Ks when all is said and done, although many times our projectors and audio equipment are better than theirs (although may not look or sound better because they have a proper setup) - and then there are the millionaires.

I will also say sometimes spending money is a sign of depression as we're searching for some happiness as if it can be bought. Many times I update my facebook status to say "happiness CAN be bought!" after buying some new technology and playing with it - but that ends a bit quickly - the real joy is searching for and learning about new hardware.

Happiness is a fine meal, a good projector, and a smokin' hot babe sitting next to you watching a movie. That's 99% of the good life right there.

Let's be realistic, if you can afford a projector that costs as much as a decent car...

More likely to be rich, but not necessarily. It is all priorities...and maybe your definition of rich. I may make the same money as the guy driving the $50k SUV while I drive a $10k car, but he probably thinks I'm crazy to spend $4000 on a vacation.

Can we get back on topic? Discussion of other's income and financial decisions is starting to bore me... I came here to figure out if I want to replace my failing AE900 with the 3010 or save money and just get a 8350 for a couple of years and then replace it. (I might consider DLP more, but rainbows scare me)

if you don't care about 3D go to the 8350, easy decision for you? there's nothing wrong with the 8350.

My concern is brightness (still trying to tame lighting in my livingroom) and bulb life (8350's had bulb issues). I would like 3D just to play around with it, but my cable provider doesn't do 3D yet and I don't own 3D Blurays yet... so I'd be limited to video games mainly. Therefore, 3D is nice, but not required at this stage for me - couple of years, I'll probably be wanting it.

As anything, Black diamond MSRP may be twice the price. It took me a long time to find out that the cheap products out there hit MSRP or get 10% off, and many expensive products out there are inflated (perhaps even more) as well, for various reasons, but doesn't mean you have to pay that. Contact AVS for pricing if interested, it's nowhere near 2x the price of the Epson.

Many say the screen pairs with the projector, but it also pairs with the enivonrmnet. A good piece of equipment stays with you after upgrades (think UPS backup systems).

Sprocket, you mentioned "seeing the 8700, 8350 as well as the hd33" previously. I don't think you gave a specific comparison of the 3010 to them.

you could always try to find a used carada screen put it up, and see if you're happy. i'm going to give you my preview on a white wall for what it's worth.

Mississippi is konwn for his painting techniques, he's like a scientist on this forum. He has some good ideas on how to paint a screen for cheap and get seemingly better results than some cheap screens, it would be wise to heed his advice.

the 100 screen shots are probably from Fraisa, who is a dealer...so...biased opinion, HEHEHE.
