You can judge ambient light rejection, yes it's still a crap shoot but IMO it's a lot easier to see how well a PJ does with ambient light than trying to analyze it's detail/color (because that could be severely off with static pictures).
Look at my sim2 video here (14.5 ft wide and 15ft diagonal I think) - at the end I turn all lights on, it's ambient light is pretty horrid. I remember having the Epson 8100 in there and it was watchable during the day.
Yes this was taking with an iphone, so the video quality is poor (motion blur, too), but you can see the problems in ambient light.
