Sony recall for smoking LCDs with melting parts?

On news this mornings ticker tape it stated sonys recall of LCDs that emitted smoke and had parts melting.No idea what models or anything beyond this statement.Anyone know more on this matter?

No word on exactly which models are affected, but we're expecting further details from Sony imminently.

Update: Looks like this might not be a full recall after all. We can't access Sony's support site right now, but the BBC reports that UK owners of the following models can summon an engineer to inspect their set if they're worried: KDL-40D3400, KDL-40D3500, KDL-40D3550, KDL-40D3660, KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40X3000, KDL-40X3500.

One more...

Sony is recalling 1.6 million television sets after faulty parts caused a number to emit smoke and start melting.

The technology firm said eight of its popular Bravia range of LCD TVs are subject to an "inspection and rework programme", following incidents reported in Japan.

Sony said a limited number of the TVs might contain a component that could overheat and ignite inside the set, causing the upper casing to melt.

"To date, there have been no reports of any damage to other property or physical injuries," the company added.

The affected televisions were manufactured in 2007 and 2008 and were mostly sold in Europe and the US.

If you own one of the products mentioned above and if you notice any abnormality (e.g. unusual noise, unusual smell or smoking), please turn it off immediately...

The model numbers are: KDL-40D3400, KDL-40D3500, KDL-40D3550, KDL-40D3660, KDL-40V3000, KDL-40W3000, KDL-40X3000 and KDL-40X3500.

Sony advises people who own one of these sets to take it to their nearest Sony service centre for a free inspection and, if necessary, a free repair.

Owners of Sony TVs can check the model number of their set by looking at the label on the back.

"If you own one of the products mentioned above and if you notice any abnormality (e.g. unusual noise, unusual smell or smoking), please turn it off immediately, unplug the power cable, stop using the TV, and contact us," Sony said.

"We have confirmed that this symptom does not occur when power is switched off."

It added: "In the unlikely event that you are affected by the issues above, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."

they should also admit the TAB design flaw and recall all older TV's that used this old, spot-welding technology... to leave their customers with TV's with bad TAB's is beyond criminal for a giant like sony.

Well, 11 incidents among 1.6 million sets, with no one being hurt and no fires started outside the sets, is hardly an emergency, let alone anything meriting the word "criminal". There are lots of things around us more dangerous than this. Seems to me a heads up is adequate at this time.

Just to be clear, and I realize your comment wasn't directed at me, this member is certainly not "Sony bashing." I merely took about 30 seconds of my valuable time to find two articles that the OP could just as easily found himself with a minimal amount of effort. Heck, my next TV will likely be a Sony.

I own a 40X3500(its the european xbr4/5), stopped using it two years ago. The recall is to late, they should have done it in 2009.

I will only buy Sony if they stop making those 80's boring square bezels.

^^^going by Sony's usual model number protocol the V2500 should be one model year older than the affected sets.

That being said I don't think it would hurt for you to call anyway just to be sure.

My comment is really not directed at anyone .. if I had taken a few more moments of my valuable time, I would have added ..

If every TV made in the last 5 years were put under scrutiny, Sony would simply be part of a long list of sets that could qualify for a recall ..

But again, Sony does the right thing, even though the odds of an issue are minimal ..

Now, let the Sony bashing begin even though they have demonstrated good corporate citizenship ..
