Help needed pairing screen with Sony VPL-HW30ES

I will be purchasing a Sony VPL-HW30ES (or possibly a used Sony VPL-VWPRO1 depending on price) and want to make sure I am getting the right screen. This is my first projector purchase ever, and I will be upgrading from a 50" Kuro Elite.

- My room is completely light controlled (pitch black to illuminated on demand)
- Room is 11ft wide x 11ft long (9ft high)
- Distance from projector lens to screen is 10ft
- Seating distance is 9ft from the screen (only one row of seats)
- 3D capability is a non-issue/non-factor in my decision
- Will be sticking with 16:9 format

The first thing I need help deciding on is screen size: 84" or 92"?
Having looked at the sticky and other calculators, it seems that a 92" screen is a tad large given my short viewing distance and short throw distance, whereas 84" would definitely be the more "friendly" size to work with. Thought? Is the extra 8" worth trying to force the bigger screen into my smaller room, or is 84" going to do just fine? Does a smaller screen give a more crisp/clear image?

Second is screen brand. The salesman I usually buy from at my local A/V store is recommending me an Elite Prime Vision (Dream Window) Custom Install screen, white, 1.1 gain. Any foreseeable problems? Is this a respectable screen, especially for smaller sizes?

With the prices of the HW30, no real reason to go with the Pro1.

As far as size, i would recommend the 92" diagonal. Very rare do people complain about going too big, always about not going big enough. At 10 ft, it will take a few movies to get used to it but you'll adjust and will not regret it.

Elite is a good brand for the entry level screens. If you are willing to spend a little more, you can consider screens from Da Lite....really good material at good price! Are you doing fixed or motorized?

Well the throw distance of the projector will be 10ft, but the viewing distance will be 9ft....does that change your screen size recommendation at all?

I am doing fixed screen.

What would be a comparable screen from Da-Lite that would offer better picture quality than the Elite I am looking at?

No not at all.

In my opinion, the Da Lite materials are noticeably better than the Elite materials. If you could up your budget a bit, it would be a good investment!

And I was wrong.....the viewing distance is 10ft as well (I stopped guessing and actually broke out the tape measure to confirm). So even better!

My A/V store carries Da-Lite as well as Elite, so I will see what I can come up with. What material/model should I be looking at for Da-Lite?

Are you going fixed, motorized or manual pull down?

Depending on the model you go with, you might be limited to only certain screen materials.

For fixed, i would look into the Cinema Vision material which is a 1.3 gain. Not as good as something like a Studiotek 130 but still a very good material for the money!

Also make sure your salesman explains the difference between the frame options you have through Da Lite. There is a pretty big price difference between them.

He can get me a 92" Da-Lite Cinema Vision screen for $450 more than the Elite screen I was originally looking at and that's without me asking him to lower the price. I'm not sure the name of the border model/material, but it's identical to the border on the Elite (aluminum frame covered in black felt material, about 3" wide on each side).

Would this be the better option over the Elite screen?

In my opinion....yes, it's worth the money.
Have you tried looking around for a better price? Just to make it an easier decision between the two.

Is it important to have the angled border (~45 degree angle) if your projector is projecting from above the top edge of your screen?

I am looking to do the same setup ... Did you end up happy with your result in a small room? Was it possible to go bigger in screen size with this projector at such a short throw distance?
