59Hz mystery on a 60Hz LCD TV Help needed

I have an original generation Sony Bravia 46" LCD 60Hz TV.

I currently have the TV plugged directly into my display card's HDMI plug. My Nvidia Windows driver detects the TV as a "Sony TV" with HDCP enabled. It also knows that the native vertical refresh rate for this TV is 60Hz.

Unfortunately, when I boot up to my Windows desktop, everything looks washed out.. as if someone cranked up the gamma level very high. Deep black colors look dark gray. Colors also looked washed out. This happens to everything being displayed, including videos.

I discovered if I create an unsupported custom display resolution with 59Hz vertical refresh rate and select this resolution/refresh rate, everything looks perfect!!

Here's the problem...
When I reboot my PC, the colors on the desktop and videos revert back to the washed out look. When I check the resolution, it shows that I am currently using the custom resolution 1920x1080@59Hz. In order to fix the problem, I have to select any random resolution other than 1920x1080@59Hz, then switch back to 1920x1080@59Hz. This resets the colors back to normal.

Why is this happening? I can reproduce this using Windows Vista or Windows 7 using two different Nvidia cards.

How can I get Windows to display the colors correct? It seems that this TV responds to 59Hz much better than 60Hz (at least from a PC).

You can script it to make the switch upon bootup. Easiest may be to setup profiles in your video card panel and then create a simple bat to call one, pause, then call the other.

Is it just the difference between 0-255 and 16-235?
