Well the dead eyed catatonic stare IMO was just part of his strange, loner, dark past detached character...almost like a serial killer with a good heart. And keep in mind his character is an oddball so anything like smirking just adds to his basket of weird mysterious clicks. If he was playing a judge or someone normal then it would be annoying. Btw someone mentioned that Keanu reeves would have been better since he has no emotion in his character and has that quiet, stoic part down pat.

As for the music, it was good by itself but to me didn't really match the mood or the film. It was almost too kiddy-like. For me Night Moves by Bob Seger would have been 100x better and matched the slow flow and mood of the film.

To be fair. The director doesn't intend for you to know what happened to the characters at the beginning of the movie. The point is they are not important to him and should not be to you. There 5 minute window was up and that's it. After its up they're on their own, he has absolutely no connection in any way to his "clients" which is something you're supposed to be getting. The "origin" of the Driver character is not important. All that's important is the uneasy feeling that you get when he reacts. This clearly was the intention of the director and writer. They want you to be in awe with the characters rage and wonder where it comes from. Lastly I really do not know what you feel needs to be explained. This movie was one of the best movies I have seen in years. It had the right amount of action and art/noire needed to make an instant classic. To compare this to other movies like Collateral which was a summer cash grab action movie at best is a sin. This movie was advertised as an action movie of sorts which is why some people left it feeling disappointed. The ones who knew what they were going to watch left the movie ecstatic.

Watched tonite.
So much is RIGHT with this movie....BUT....
As it turns out, Drive is a film in search of a destination.
Unfortunately, it really is unsure of what it wants to say or go.

Allegedly, this is a movie about "driving....."
In reality, driving has almost nothing to do with the story arc.
This is a story about revenge...or something else.

The cinematography is superb, and without it, I don't how far I would have lasted.

Fine performance by Gosling and CM (again).
Brooks and Perlman are OK, but nothing spectacular.

The pop songs pulled me right out, very poor decision to include them in the soundtrack (which was perfect).

Steady, man. Get a hold of yourself........

That was my experience as well. ALMOST turned it off at the ~1 hour mark as the movie was doing very little for me. I found the main character pretty unconvincing in his role which was the biggest problem with the film for me.

Audio was good and supported the film beautifully, but nothing memorable and certainly nothing you would throw on for "demo" purposes.

PQ/cinematography was excellent and the star of the show IMO.

Overall, glad I rented!

I agree with you entirely. The look and sound of the film were both wonderful and I loved the way it was edited. All of that was so good that when I saw it for the second time, this time on BD, I managed to avoid being turned off by how unconvincing Gosling's Driver was.

I understand that.
But I wasn't convinced a person like him would do what he later did.
It didn't ring true for me.

I like the movie so much I bought the music CD and have an image from the movie set as wallpaper on my computer.

Quite possibly the most overhyped & overrated movie of 2011.

Earlier today I posted to the other Drive thread that I loved Carey Mulligan as Irene in Drive. I really liked the scene in the apartment house hallway when the Driver came out of his apartment and saw Irene sitting on the hall floor. She was adorable. No wonder the Driver was willing to do what he did for her.

I think he handles it the way he does because he's a sociopath.

And he knows he's one and he uses it. However he's also smart enough to now he's not happy about it or at least knows he's missing something. Irene and her son (and even her husband strangely) allow him to access , albeit fleetingly , a part of his emotional life that is always normally elusive to him.

I think the film riffs on the idea that archetypal heroes and their heroic acts would be more appropriately regarded as the handywork of abnormal mindsets and consequently the most effective heroes are in fact likely to be sociopaths.

You've mentioned his upbringing twice already but nothing suggests that in the film - or are you getting it from the book (not read it meself)?

Why am I not surprised that some people don't like the film? After all the director is known for indie foreign films. I suspect they have a real let down when it turns out NOT to be a car chase action movie but instead slow paced realism like many indie films. Of course I am a big fan of indie productions because they tend to be more honest.

A poor generalization. I am a big fan of indie and foriegn films, yet did not like Drive.

Well, the way he was nurtured probably turned him into a socially inept sociopath. The Driver's main problem in life is that he only looks comfortable when there is a hammer in his hand.

I watched it last night have to admit i fell asleep. Ill have to rewatch it on a later date to give it another go.
