HMZ-T1 Review for PC Users FPS, racing, RTS

Here is my review of the HMZ-T1. First off I drove to the nearest place to demo it about 3 hrs. This is written on my phone on the way back since my gf is driving so bare with the spelling mistakes. This review anwsers all the questions I had about the device and detailed features of when hooked via hdmi to a gaming laptop. When i placed the device on my head, and adjusted it according to the manufacturers instructions, it was a lot heavier than i expected. This device will either be heavy on your nose or on your forehead. tested it with NFS, starcraft 2, and team fortress 2 for about an hour by attaching to the hmz-t1 via hdmi as hdmi is the only way to connect to the device. So once connected the windows screen went to 720p. On this screen I adjusted the eye width dongle until the centered was focused. This is when I noticed the second flaw of the device; you cannot focus the center and the corners at the same time, you will only be able to focus one. This leads me to my first game, starcraft 2. When I booted it up it said 1080p in the top corner and it played this and all games at 1080p. There were no noticable disadvantages at this resolution. So in the game I had noticed the incredible colors and blacks, and the motion was extremelysmooth. Even though it looked nice, this game is unplayable using this device, since the edges started getting blurry at the minimap and unit build sections. Also, i should mention that the device does not make the screen seem huge, it honestly did not seem larger than my 25 inch monitor at home from 3 ft away. I went in there expecting an imax experience and the device falls very far from that. Also dont expect total immersion, any ambient light will come in through the top and bottem. So, this device will not be playable for any Rts. So i took the device off and my gf told me that people were staring at me quite a bit, i am guessing the gaming laptop didnt make me look any cooler. Screw them onto the next game, a sim called nfs shift. Ok this device worked very well for this game, the motion was smooth and the colors were great. since you dont look in the corners for detail it was great. Last game was portal 2 where the game ran great again. This thing works great for sim, fps games and movies but the device will hurt your head after a few hours, i started to get a headache after the 1 hr i spent there. yes, 1 hr but i let some kids play on it too. I also played some music on it and although the earpieces felt cheap, the sound was good and had some nice bass. Now, will I buy it and should you? The anwser is sadly no. Your money will be better spent on a 27 inch 3d monitor. The size will be the same, there will be no blurry edges, and your head will not start to hurt. The only advantage to this is that it is slightly more portable, has better 3d and colors. Oh ya, I forgot to talk about the 3d. it is pretty good in that it has nice depth and no crosstalk, but do things jump far out where it can feel like it is right in front of you? No. It is just like seeing it on a larger 3d tv. Anyway I hope you like my review, i tried to be as unbiased as possible.

I'd like to read your review. Could you please break it down into paragraphs.

Was your gaming laptop using Nvidia 3D Vision or ATI's solution?

I would, but I am lazy...

About the laptop, it uses the ati solution. I should mention that I also went through all the options on theheadset and there are no fine focus options oranything like that. I did a bunch of research on nvidia 3d vision v2 and it looks likethe best solution by-far. I cant emphasize enough how your head will hurt after using this. I am just happy I didnt preorder it, I was tempted... Plus a nice 3d 27 inch monitor will cost the same. There is no way this device can work as a monitor substitute since the edges are crazy fuzzy

The current generation of 3D Vision is great when used with DLP, I can't comment on LCD as I haven't tried it. 3D Vision 2 is supposed to make massive improvements for LCD users.

Boogle, Thanks for the evaluation. Do you wear prescription glasses? I assume not, since you didn't mention them. The main item that concerns me is the center/corner focus issue.

Note to self - try before you buy

You could copy paste and add your own paragraph marks

This is not the first I have heard about the blurry edges, I can't remember where but I read it somewhere else also. I think this won't matter too much for movies, but it might be a problem with games. The reason I don't think that it will be a problem with movies is that I use my own DIY anamorphic lens with my projector which produces pincusion and blur at the edges, looks bad on a test pattern but you don't see it when you watch a movie.

Did you use lightblockers? If you aren't using light blockers than you probably won't get the immediate effect of the large screen.

Boogle, thanks for the review. I've been curious about this for some time now.

Would you mind talking about the immersion aspect a bit more?

For instance, when I'm looking at a 3D monitor, I've always felt like I'm looking through a window into another world. It's not very immersive, because I'm clearly not part of that world, but rather an outside observer looking at a window.

So I'm imagining that the experience with an HMD would be quite different, especially for FPS games (or anything played from first-person perspective). If the content is in 2D, I can understand that it would feel like a giant theater screen in front of you. But what about 3D FPS games? Does it feel like you're INSIDE that world, as opposed to watching inside from an outside window?
