HiMedia HD900B Full 3D Media Streamer (Realtek 1186-based) - Page 8

Man, don't make me feel bad for returning the Oppo ! Will try crackerbear's suggestions and see what firmware improvements bring. Compare $200 for HD900B to $500 for Oppo, hard to justify latter just for 3D ISO playback. Willing to give this or other affordable (Prodigy, eGreat) Realtek 1186 players a chance for a little while at least. If not, I know the Oppo is still there.

Thanks for the update, Brajesh! If it turns out that none of the 1186 players work well, keep in mind that Sigma's 8910 chipset is going to be appearing on players soon eventually.

The 8910 chipset looks amazing, 1.2ghz dual core. I can imagine the players will be closer to $500 though. Gonna be a while before we see them so the himedia will do me fine for now, just gonna wait for a couple more user reviews first

I just received my unit today.

I am so disappointed in the HiMedia HD900B

If you have a high end 3D plasma like the 65" Panasonic P65VT30 (that I bought this year) which I have, you will be disappointed with the HD900B because....

it does not work with this TV.

After I powered on the unit, it shows the blue screen with the logo HiMedia while the unit is booting. Then after a few seconds, the TV screen become blank/black and it says "No signal. Ensure that the external device is turned on and properly connected to the TV's input. Select the source by pressing [INPUT] on the remote."
All of my other player works fine such as my Dune Smart H1, Popbox 3D, Brite-View, and WD TV.

I then bring the HD900B downstairs and plug it into my high end 60" plasma Pioneer Elite Kuro 151FD (that I bought 2 years ago) and it works just fine. I even was able to upgrade to the latest firmware 1.00.26 and able to play all .mkv and .iso files without problem. Unfortunately, my Pioneer Elite Kuro 151FD is not a 3D TV and the main reason that I bought this unit is for 3D iso.

This is so frustrating. Should I just return this unit? So far it is useless because it does not work at all with my Panasonic P65VT30 3D TV.

I have so many 3D .iso that I want to test to give a review for you guys here. I have 3D FULL SBS .mkv as well to give feed back as well. This is really sad.

Just a thought, plug the HD900B into your working TV and set the TV Mode from remote or settings and plug it back into your 65" Panasonic.

Perhaps it's not working with a particular output once it reaches the main menu since you say you are able to initially see the bootup screen.

+1 to this post...

First answer from HiMedia

1) try to change a HDMI calble to test

2) try to change a HDMI port of P65VT30 ( we have test it on P50GT30 )

Yeah, something doesn't sound right. I have a Panny VT25 and ST30 tv I will try the HiMedia on (I am expecting it to work since those are my tvs to test on!)

Yep, there's no reason it shouldn't work if it's displaying fine on another TV. Just a wild guess, but perhaps the HD900B is set to 480i as default video out at factory. Some TV's don't support it (your Panny is one of them). Great TV BTW though. Like crackerbear suggested, set it to 480p on another TV and plug it back into your Panny. It's most likely a resolution match issue.

On Full-SBS I got: Format unsupported!
Half-SBS works good!

For HiTV 2.0, the default stream provider is Voole, which doesn't work for US users.

Press the red button on the remote to show a list of other providers. PPS is a good one and most of theirs content will stream.

Chinese content will tend to stream very well, but US content such as movies and shows are hit-and-miss. May have something to do with licensing that prevents the streaming site from sending the stream to US IP addresses.

It would be great if HiMedia can do a similar RSS video feed consolidation application for US sites.

For those who suggested that I should set the video setting to a higher resolution on my Pioneer plasma and then plug the unit back to the Panasonic plasma and see if it would work....sounds like a good idea. However, I am at work and will not able to test this theory out until I get home tonight.

It sounds like a video problem since the Panasonic plasma was able to display the blue screen with the HiMedia logo when it is booting up. It became blank after it tries to reach the "home" screen.

Thanks guys. I will let you guys know the outcome tonight.

I had the same issue with the HiMedia 900B not working on my Samsung Plasma (PN58C8000). I would get the blue screen with the HiMedia logo when booting up, but would go blank after that.

For some reason my HiMedia 900B had the screen resolution set to 16:10 and the Samsung would not accept that.

Had to use RCA cables so I could atleast see something and was able to change the the settings to "16:09". After that the HiMedia worked with my Samsung with the HDMI cable. Hope that helps.

Let me see if I can upload the .img file for you somewhere.

Tried two more 3D Blu-rays today: 'Cars 2' and 'Toy Story 3'. With BD 1.0 setting, I get a 'This disc has recognized your Blu-ray player and/or display isn't 3D compatible' message. Tried 'Direct Play' and it plays 3D fine, but not the correct playlist, rather the one with Spanish credits . This happens with both ISO's.

Also, re-tried 'Rio', which I'd reported having severe ghosting with (and didn't happen via Oppo BDP-93), and it's still there no matter what setting I try with the HD900B. Hope someone has this movie and can try on their HD900B.

I still think, if this device had the full bluray profile 5 liscence, then more 3D Blurays would work better.

That would be great, but it ain't going to happen unfortunately. I'd be really surprised if it did.

Leo, can you relay to HiMedia that a playlist select feature is sorely needed ASAP! Thanks!

Tom (or anyone else) having trouble w/the latest .26 firmware, I uploaded it here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=E1MKG4KW

Just download, put on a USB stick (formatted mine as FAT32 to be safe) and choose 'USB Update' on your HD900B.
Just got mine today. Some very preliminary findings.

I first hooked it up to my office TV and got an unsupported format error. Hooked it through my Radiance VP and found that it was set to 720p50. Fixed that.

Firmware updated to .26 without issue.

Turned on SMB and found my unRAID server with no problem.

Seems that the player outputs 60Hz as 60.00 (not 59.94). Colorspace is YCbCr444 - just like the current Sigma players.

Will spend some time with 24p and 3D ISOs over the network tonight.

Yeah, that works for me. Red button is the key.

That could be why the poster above cannot get it working properly on his Panasonic plasma. I have a VT25 and it, and other Panny sets, cannot display a 50Hz PAL signal.
Yay!!!!! I got it to work with my Panasonic p65vt30. The video setting was at 720p 50 hz by default and I used the Pioneer Plasma to change it to 1080p 60 hz and now it works with my Panasonic plasma.

I did play most 3D iso and they all work great except for Rio 3D .iso. Somehow this movie 3D effects is a little off and it gave me some eye strain.

One of the best 3D effect for a movie is Sammy's Adventure. I think it has the best 3D effect for a computer animated movie. The plot/story is decent but what really shines is the 3D effects. It is a non-U.S.A made computer animated movie.

Oh, and the Full SBS 3D does not work. Only Half SBS 3D works.

So far I really like this player. I don't need to see any menu or any special feature from my 3D movies so by just pressing play and seeing the main movie starts is all that I ask for. It just works. I want simplicity.

I have not find any major bugs that would irritate me yet. However, I have not test everything yet.
A little more info after first round of testing.

2D 24p plays at 23.98, but 3D 24p plays at 24.00 Did not notice any major issues as a result of this.

Rio 3D requires inverting the sync - only title I have noticed this on so far.

Same issue with Cars 2 starting with the Spanish credits. Toy Story 3 only plays in 2D for me. Toy Story 1 & 2 play fine.

For some titles, chapter skip does not work. You can go to a specific time mark though.

Major stuttering with Monsters vs. Aliens (I am watching everything over SMB on unRAID server). Also starts with German soundtrack. Minor stuttering here and there with some other titles. Most titles with no stuttering at all.

Occasional click/pop with chapter skipping, starting titles, navigating through menus.

Was playing Final Destination, and playback suddenly stopped and returned me to the menu.

Overall seems to work pretty well. Hopefully they can sort out some of these issues soon.

Anyone know how to access Popup and Top Menus?

Ofter same test on new BR 3D ISO (H900b set to direct play):

Toy Story 3D.iso -->start in 3D - OK

Rio 3D.iso: --> start in 3D mode but with ghosting and no 3D effects, I tried to reverse the glasses and I found good image, this means that Left-Right are inverted (On my Samsung 55C8000 i can fix it in settings-3D-correction)
Hope this can help someone with Rio ghosting.

Cars 2 3D.iso --> start in 3D, seems OK but every few menutes some stuttering (seems to hang for a fraction of sec)
Have someone the same problem with Cars 2 ISO??

My unit has the latest beta firmware - 1.0.0.26. I am having problem getting the external HDD (3.5") to be recognized by HD900B. Very frustrating!!! Is this a bug? But I have no problem getting 2.5" ext HDD to recognize. Its kind of a hit-and-miss affair when it comes to USB connectivity. Anyone experiencing this problem?

Leo, can you advise?

Unpack the iso and play the movie from the bluray folder. I found this method worked with PowerDVD on my laptop, the added processing required to access the ISO via a virtual drive was too much for the CPU to handle so it stuttered occasionally, unpacking the ISO and playing directly from the folder made the stuttering disappear. In the himedia's case it could be a similar limitation with the realtek chipset? Perhaps the bitrate of this particular movie is higher than the others that do run smoothly? The CPU would need to unpack the ISO 'on the fly' to access the contained folder correct? With the higher bitrate that additional task is what might be pushing the chipset past its limits.
TBH, I'd be disappointed if it did play smoothly as that would confirm it is a limitation of the chipset.

Does the unit recognize the internal 3.5" HDD ok? The drive isn't formatted as HSF+ is it? The device only recognizes FAT, NTFS and EXT3.

I can't help your situation, but it'd be more useful to know a little more information like what size and brand/model both your external drives are.

I have a 3TB Western Digital internal drive (WD30EZRSDTL) and a 400GB Seagate external drive (ST3400601CB-RK) and they both work fine. I have also formatted a USB stick as HFS+ and the HD900B recognises it fine.
