HiMedia HD900B Full 3D Media Streamer (Realtek 1186-based) - Page 2

The Kaiboer K860i looks nice, but it's pricey at nearly $700. What would be the advantage of this over Oppo BDP-93? I have the Oppo and it plays 3D ISO's will full menus perfectly, but doesn't support playback over SMB, only USB 2.0 and eSata. Also, no jukebox, etc. It's basically a Blu-ray player with ISO support.

Not to sidetrack this thread, but it is $490 with shipping on SingingEgg [ http://www.singingegg.com/electronic...ia-player.html ]. Priced similar to Oppo BDP-93, but I expect it to have better media streamer capabilities.

The reservations I have about HiMedia HD900B right now are over reports of hiccups when playing ISO's over SMB/NFS. I expect they'll be fixed, but think I'll wait until at least this and proper auto-detection/playback of all/most 3D ISO's are firmware-updated.

Is that your comment Ganesh on the SingingEgg site? If so, are you doing a review on Andatech?

If one of these players gets a proper video jukebox my interest will grow... I have no desire to go backwards just so I can play one of my 5 or so Blu-ray 3Ds

I hear ya, which is why I was hoping Xtreamer's Prodigy would be out by now. But, hate the way they do business and miscommunicate with users/customers. Still, just maybe this will be what it's hyped up to be.

Nope, that is not me. I did send them a request for a unit.. No response yet, maybe they think it is not review worthy

What do you define as a proper video jukebox?

The HiMedia has thumbnail browsing, a mode where you can browse with movie posters, you can sort by recently added, it organises series hierarchically, you can search video by text string..

The HiMedia 600 players will also run YAMJ and Xtreamer's 3.07 firmware. I would expect both of these to be made compatible with the 900 soon.

What else does it need?

Now, this does sound good. Do you know if the 900B would also support Flash skins like Eversion?

Yes, YAMJ or similar. Thumbnail browsing is pointless IMO. A proper video jukebox shows metadata/fanart, allows you to browse/sort by various categories (genre, etc...), TV Show support with individual epsiode details, group all your media into one view if spread across multiple folders/shares, etc... You know, a jukebox
post #41 of 1566
Yeah, after using the Boxee Box and now a Dune D1 with yADIS, I find it mandatory to have a jukebox that groups all my shares spread over like 8 hard drives into one view with thumbnails and metadata. A watched indicator would be nice too which is one thing I miss from the Boxee Box since I watch so many different shows and movies at the same time.

That's what I'm waiting for as well. Leo expects to PM us tomorrow.

I've just read that this product will not display menus in BD3D, only in 2D bluray. Is this correct?

Right, you get a BD-lite menu. You'll see what it looks like via links in the first post of this thread. Don't think the ability to select playlists is there yet; maybe another feature that'll need to get added via a firmware update later.
I'm torn... I wanted this, but it feels like I will be living with a lot of bugs for now.

True, but I expect Xtreamer's Prodigy to be no different. Price of being on the bleeding edge I guess.

To those of you who got Leo's quote via PM w/3-day UPS shipping, I asked him for a Ground or Priority Mail option, so if you can wait a little longer for the package to arrive for 1/2 the shipping cost, look for another PM from him tonight.

I decided to get the HD900B. Still not sure if it's a smart decision, but I'm willing to try it out. If I can eBay my Oppo BDP-93 and recoup most of my investment, then be able to just play most 3D ISO's on the HD900B w/o the frills, still worth it IMHO until something like the Dune or PCH appears w/full 3D.

Honestly I have never used a 3TB drive. Some of the complaints may revolve around the current players not supporting drives greater then 2TB drives, not the 3TB drive itself. I believe the new chips should support (I know the mede8er I just got with the 1185 claims support for 3TB). For any media player I would always recommend going with a green 3TB drive (5400-5900RPM), as heat is always a concern in a confined space
post #54 of 1566
last time I checked specs of HD900B, - there is no any limit to 3TB, actually they say that using 3TB should be perfectly fine. You saying a green model,so I guess that's a WD . Do you know what is the diff b. reg.HDD and a enterprise model...The latter is twice more exp.
thanks,Tom

I think Hitachi and WD have Green 3TB drives (not sure about Seagate). Don't bother with the Enterprise Drives

Well, I will wait to hear back from Leo on my PM before I make my final decision. Definitely will do a review if I become an owner.

Leo!
You got to open a web site, with all that stuff from HIMEDIA. Become a authorized dealer for US - the first one.Advertise these media players wide open, particularly here,in AVS Forum.

Tom

I have a reseller web account and can actually create a web site as well as create a forum using phpbb. I can easily host it.
