So, I just checked out the Vita at Best Buy and I have to say, it really is a nice piece of hardware. I didn't have time to play any games and there was only the one demo model, but the construction is very solid and the ergonomics are spot on (my PSP2000 feels like a toy in comparison). I know the Vita's main competitor is the 3DS, but from an engineering standpoint, it reminds me more of a large smart phone or small tablet. The buttons feel good and the analog sticks are infinitely better than the PSP's nubs. When you get your hands on it, the $250-300 pricetag doesn't seem at all unreasonable.
I asked the Sony rep when the 3G model was coming out in Canada and he said "a month" after the Wi-Fi launch, but he didn't have any details on the data plans. I've read some reviews that say the screen is plastic, but it felt like glass to me. I asked the rep and he said it was "probably glass". If it is plastic, it's certainly a higher grade of plastic than what is used in the PSP (aren't all capacitive touchscreens made of glass?). I don't really like screen protectors, but I guess I'll get one anyways just to be safe (Sony should have splurged and used Gorilla Glass).
Checking out the Vita has only made me want it more. It's going to be a long 2 weeks...
Edit: I guess the screen is definitely plastic. I took pretty good care of my PSP, but it has tons of fine scratches because I didn't get a screen protector. Though the plastic is better on the Vita, a screen protector is probably a must-buy.
Weird, the safety manual in the box says that the screen is glass, but there is no way a glass screen could take the beating it takes in the above video.
