Perforated screens - good idea?

Since we want to mount our screen lower than most people, our media room guy today recommended a perforated screen with the speaker behind it since otherwise the center channel will sound weird because it is too close to the floor. He also said the voice would sound more nature since he could mount where it will better approximate where the speakers lips are.

While I listen to speakers behind perforated screens all of the time at the movies, I wondered what people on the forum thought about that for a home media room? (The room will be dedicated media room with no windows and 14 by 20 in size.)

Perforated or weave screens are ideal for HT acoustics. But, it depends on the screen. For perforated I'd use Stewarts micro-perf as long as you can get the speakers at least 6" behind the screen. Most other perforated screens the holes are too big for HT use IMHO. There are many different types of weaves as well. The Screen Excellence Enlightor 4K is the best I've used.

Perforated screens have an advantage that you can get various types of screen materials perforated. So depending on your room conditions you can get a screen that fits your viewing environment. The weaves can be excellent but often can not be had with much gain if that is required.

Exactly what BobL said. I am a fan of AT screens both Perforated and woven screens.

As mentioned, depending on your projector and screen size, one might be better than the other....it's all application driven.
