Flat panel wall mounting concerns...?

Greetings, forum users and experts! So, I'm considering the purchase of a Samsung PN59D7000 plasma television. We had planned on a wall-mount installation using s Sanus LL11 HDPro ultra slim device. The manufacturer claims a .55" space between the back of the set and the wall. Then I read something in a user post on CNet expressing concern for the unit overheating due to close proximity to the wall. Is this a valid concern? And, to avoid possible warranty problems, would the use of the Samsung factory wall mounting system be advised?

Thank you in advance for your input.

If you use the factory wall mounting system and something happens to the television it’s under warranty because it was an approved accessory. Use of a third party device may not. I honestly wouldn't use the ultra slim device for that exact reason and because plasma televisions do tend to run hotter then LED LCD tv's. I don't want to prattle on and on about what to buy and not to buy because I don't know your finances, but if you have the choice between an LED LCD and a plasma tv, I'd go with the LED LCD because its super thin, runs cool, is extremely energy efficient, and has amazing picture quality.

Thanks for your input, Mike! I think we're pretty much settled on the plasma as it suits our viewing content better, but I'll do some more research on the mounting systems as the idea of the unit overheating makes sense.

OPINION mode here ...

As long as there is clearance from the wall and no vertical paths blocked, there is a good chance that close is actually better than free air.

Think about the "chimney effect", the warmer air rises at higher velocity, pulling (lower pressure at higher velocity) air through vents, increasing air flow.

MANY years back, doing heat sink measurements in mobile equipment, we found this to be true ... transistor case temperatures were lower when we passively channeled the air at the heat sinks.

I wonder if there has been any measurements with wall mounts ...

Hmmm... that is an interesting observation, but wouldn't some kind of "chimney" need to be in place for the venturi effect to occur? Just a thought... no need to get too off topic here.

Somewhere in the manual, it will say what clearance it wants. Read it.

I personally think bottom and top clearance is what's important, not the rear. Hot air naturally exhaust up and cool air draws in from bottom. If the TV has a rear-fancing fan however, THEN u want some rear clearance as to not make the fan's job harder.

Two schools of thoughts on warranty, am on the "if I listen to everything they tell me, am gonna be a much poorer man today."

Funny you should point this out as I'm reading the manual now. There are no specs regarding the spacing between the wall and the unit, though your explanation concurs with that of the manual in that there is a vent at the top of the unit for that purpose.

On another note, Samsung indicates their 59" sets are NOT VESA compliant. WTF??? Why not, and what does this mean to me? (I already read the VESA explanation, so I get that...) The website from which I plan to purchase the mount in which I'm interested identifies the mount as applicable, and the mount is VESA compliant. Huh? Too damn confusing...

I've had my Samsung PN50A550 wall mounted with a Monoprice slim mount since purchase. No overheating or other problems whatsoever...

Any mount will have some clearance between the back of the set and the wall. That is all that's needed for proper heat evacuation, assuming all other things being equal.

The only issue would be having the back of the set flush mounted directly touching the wall.

Thanks for your input regarding your experiences. I've read the owner's manual and have come to the same conclusion. Appreciate everyone's feedback!
