Zaph Audio ZRT? (looking for a speaker build)

Thread Starter
Hello, I've been searching for a speaker to build and stumbled upon the Zaph Audio ZRT 2 way and 2.5 way on Madisound. Both builds look appealing but I'm unsure which is right for me. The 2 way kit is ported, while the 2.5 way kit is sealed. Could someone explain the advantages/disadvantages of each build? I know there is a 2.5 way ported but I won't be able to use the Madisound cabinet, so I'd have to get one from a 3rd party.

If anyone could direct me on a suitable amplifier to pair with the ZRT that would be greatly appreciated as I'm still new to all of this.

I'm open to suggestions, even alternatives to the ZRT. Just to give everyone an idea I'm willing to spend $3k-$4k for a pair of speakers and amplifier. If it helps I'm located in Toronto, Canada. I'll also consider purchasing used equipment from a local dealer or online (Canuck Audio Mart).

Thanks
James

You want to purchase a premade cab, or build one? Sorry didn't quite get that part.

Have you looked at www.solen.ca

Don't worry about a "matching" amp.

First off, have you read Zaph's page on the ZRT? Way more info than Madisound provides. For example, Zaph provides documentation for both sealed and vented 2.5-way.

The big difference betwen 2-way and 2.5-way has to do with your planned application, and the need for baffle step compensation (BSC). This is the knob a designer uses to accomodate room placement, either near/on a wall, or free-standing. BSC is a modification of mid-range sensitivity to achieve flat response with a driver (all bass drivers behave this way) that has a falling response at low frequencies

The 2-way will have lower sensitivity if you need full BSC, but the level is adjustable if you need to put them against a wall (scroll down to 2-way options). The 2.5-way uses the second bass driver to augment the low end and flatten the roll-off without taking away midrange sensitivity. They can only sound right when sitting out in the room, 2-3 feet from the nearest wall.

If you're considering a home theater application, you may want to consider Zaph's SR-71, as it has a CC design, the Blackbird as I recall... It's a PE thread.

+1 on the amp don't matter much. Just don't go small, then turn it up.

Have fun,
Frank

i'm running them on 60w and they sound great with enough volume to satisfy most. Bass is full and warm. They must out at least 2' from all walls to sound their best. For a two driver system they will surprise with their ability to convey a very large sound with pinpoint precise imaging when placement is optimal.

If I was going to spend 4k on a pair of speakers and an amp, here's what I would do.
Woofer: TD15h (600/pr)
Mid: PHL 1120 (300/pr)
tweeter: Raal 140 (1350/pr. Holy...they went up!) or Fountek Neopro5i (680/pr)

Amp: EP4000. (350)

A person to build the crossover for you. (Price?)

Or pick a speaker built by a good crossover designer with a similar design as above.

Close to it. He uses a TD12s. That's a system I was going to build, but have zero time available to design a speaker. It's taking me forever just to build a kit, the Dynamic 4t's.

I have on order td6 + 12s+g3. I'm hoping Jeff B can help me out. He promise he would.

I keep forgetting John has the TD6's out. Those would be nice to hear against a PHL1120 to see who the SQ winner is. As for aesthetics, the TD6 would match the 12.

I use the drivers used in the ZRTs with active crossover and smaller (.5cf) cabinets. They are wonderfully neutral and non-fatiguing.
