Grand Theft Auto V: Out Now On PS3 & Xbox 360 - Page 15

Amazing the leap in graphics they made. Still need more hands on time to judge the gameplay as I'm not fully comfortable with it yet and haven't tinkered with all the settings. Feels sluggish as of now though.
Sluggish, like a wet sponge? No Airplane fans here? Oh, well. The controls seem to take a little to get used to, I'll admit.
I picked up this game the day it came out. I have not played a GTA game since the first one.

Questions

Is there an AVS crew?

How do you acquire money? I see someone already owns an airport. Either I just haven't played long enough or i'm missing opportunities somewhere.

I have a few comments and/or questions about things I've notice while running and driving around.

1) Is there a reason why people you hit go down so easily? Before, if you punched someone on the street, they would put up a bit of a fight. Now, they are lying there dead within 1 or 2 punches.

2) Is the scale on this game smaller than before? I don't know if it's just me, but I'm having a harder time making things out than I did before. All the text on the game, the blips on the HUD and the cars in the distance all look smaller to me. I honestly can't tell there is a cop closing in on me until he is right in front.

3) Are any areas locked off like in the past. Meaning, in San Andreas, you couldn't get to San Fierro or Las Venturas until you reached a certain point. Same for the New Jersey section of GTA IV. The other night I decided to drive around and I got pretty far without anything or anyone stopping me.

4) The GameStop blimp pre-order bonus is pretty lame. I tried it out and all it is was a SLOW way to sightsee around the area. I'll wait until I can get a plane or helicopter and do the same, but faster.

5) I don't know if it's just my imagination, but I could swear that some of the areas are the same as in San Andreas. Yes, I know it's technically the same area, but as I'm driving past things I'm thinking to myself "I remember that place." Hell, I think I may have even been near CJ's starting neighborhood at one point, but I couldn't find the actual street. biggrin.gif

1)Not sure. I seem to remember trading punches with a guy for a while but that might have been during a mission.

2)Yeah the menus and text are too small for me. The phone is a lot easier to read than the one in IV though.

3)Nope.

There is a website for the Los Santos DMV. It's pretty funny.

Here are a few ways to make money early in the game. You can rob the convenience stores, rob armored trucks, or steal a taxi and do taxi missions.

Thanks for this. i never thought of the taxi one. I seen the armored truck..when i do it states you have to shoot the doors to open...haven't been able to pull that one off yet.
I stole a cargo truck full of cars and also a truck pulling a boat. Couldn't figure out how to get the cars or the boat off of hte trucks. Can you do this? I was able to get in the boat and turn it on, just couldn't get it off the trailer.

That's the cheap & petty way to make some quick money in GTA V tongue.gif

You can make some serious money playing the stock market.

A tip I'll give is when playing as Franklin and doing the assassination missions for Lester listen closely to the companies he gives you tips on and then invest in those companies in the stock market. You can invest all of your money with all 3 different characters before doing these assassination missions. After you start the mission and get the tip from Lester don't play and complete the mission yet.The best thing to do is to turn off the auto save feature.Re load your last game save, invest in the stocks Lester tips you off on and then start Lester's assassination missions.

GTA 5 retail sales pass $1 billion in three days
Quote:
Hits Milestone faster than any entertainment property, claims Rockstar

Rockstar today claims to have set more records with Grand Theft Auto 5, which it says passed $1 billion in global retail sales in just three days.

That figure, extracted from 'company estimates', sets new records for any entertainment property, says Rockstar, including games and movies.

It took the previous record holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, 15 days to gross $1 billion in sales. The record for feature films is The Avengers, which reached that milestone in 10 days, Rockstar points out.

This comes after the publisher announced day-one worldwide retail sales of $800 million. By comparison, Activision claimed to have delivered the biggest game launch of 2012 with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, with estimate retail sales of $500 million on day one.

"Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment," commented Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick.

"We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto V."

The game has also broke sales records in UK, claiming its place as the biggest game launch in UK history with around 1.57 million sales, according to Chart Track figures.

Yeah, it's crazy impressive on a technical level, but the PS3 is just struggling to keep up with it.

Thinking about a bit....how on earth are they ever going to manage this on next gen? The digital only version can barely keep up with the streaming off of just the HDD. Increasing the resolution, draw distance and texture detail is going to massively increase the burden on the HDD. I'm sure the PS4 HDD will be faster, but eurogamer reported their own upgraded 500GB HDD can't keep up either.

I dunno what they were thinking outfitting the next gen systems with non-hybrid laptop HDDs. Part of the reason they might not have announced for next gen yet is they're still trying to figure out how to even pull it off.

The Sata 1 port on the PS3 is the bottle neck here. Given the recent announcements in Solid State tech, hybrid drives and possibly all mechanical drives may be gone in just a few years.

Has Eurogamer tested GTA5 running off of a SSD?
Yeah, I really don't know. PS3 is pretty old hardware and they've done some very impressive work (probably doesn't hurt to have such an insane budget on a game either). I need to get into some more missions to see how the framerate holds up. I was pretty skeptical before I played it.

SATA 1 is still 150 MB/sec, far more than any HDD...it's definitely the HDD itself that's the bottleneck. It's just too much random access to ask of a single drive, especially a cheap 2.5inch one, and extra especially when there's no way to defragment it. God help anyone unlucky enough to play the digital version of it on a years old 60GB PS3 that's been fragmented to hell after years of use.

I have been able to sink in some quality time on this game after picking it up on Tuesday. Based on fun factor, the game is quite impressive. Unfortunately, the last game I completed was The Last of Us which in my opinion was the pinnacle of storytelling in video games, GTA 5 so far, pales in comparison. If I had been playing a drinking game for all the times I have heard the N**** word and the F*** word, I would literally had died 50+ times from alcohol poisoning, it gets tiresome after awhile. The characters so far have ZERO likeable qualities, which makes it tough to get vested in the story. At least Niko had some redeeming qualities.

I just unlocked Lester, so my main story experience is still pretty weak, but if the first 5-7 missions are any indication, the story will be a let down.

Either way, Rockstar has made an amazing game when you just want to mess around and have an epic cop chase. I haven't done any heists yet, but I expect those will be a treat.

Games like this get me very excited for how amazingly large and detailed next gen games will be in 5-8 years.

How do you flip someone off?

How do you take a selfie?

Can you fly a jumbo jet? I wasn't able to get in when i went to the airport.

Where is the best spot to jack a helicopter, besides the airport?

Can you open armored truck doors with a shotgun?

Quick tip, if you arm a weapon in the doorway of an Ammunation, then turn around and shoot the attendant before he shoots you, then you can shoot both cash registers in the store to net about $100 to $200 per register. Typically, this doesnt event register a wanted level and the ammunation attendant re-appears after 5 minutes.

Most amazing moment so far: Being chased down the freeway with a 5 star wanted level in a tractor with a blade aerating thingy attached to the back.

First impression from me as I've been playing GTA since #3 and loved every one of them with GTA:VC being the best once you turned off all those silly graphic effects that made everything blurry for now good reason. I have only played about 4 hours today as I just got back from a two week vacation overseas. Funny thing was seeing GTA ads on metro stations in Germany, Russia and Stockholm. Truly a worldwide launch cool.gif

The good:
WOW WOW and WOW. Graphics wise this game looks like its running on PS3.5 or a beta PS4 - it looks SO much better then previous game its not even funny.
The animations and transitions from cut scene to live action is flawless (so far), even the way you switch between characters has a smooth feel to it.
I downloaded the manual to my iPad mini and the level of detail on the map is stupid crazy. I just wish you could add way points or notes inside the app, that would be awesome.
The cars handle much better, no more overly bouncy. Headlights look great at night.
Radio stations are a massive improvement.
The cover system seems better as I've only gotten "stuck" or on the wrong side of an object a few times. This happened way too often in the last game to the point where I just gave up on using cover.
The motion capture is really good, the characters move and perform actions very smooth and realistically. For example while trying to open doors they lean (or put their weight) into the effort. Niko would just push on a door and it opened as if made from cardboard.
Some details are nuts, for example the dome light and dash lights on the cars actually WORK! If you let a character sit still for awhile they start starring at girls that walk by as if checking them out, its pretty funny. The map switches to interior floor plan and the normal map has a 3D-ish look to it that is more modern.
You have a dog and it makes a mess in the backyard... 'nuf said.
The lighting effects are excellent, especially the fast-forward sun motion you get when a mission starts at a certain time.

The bad:
Aiming seems "off", not sure it its because I haven't upgraded my characters stats enough yet or what, but the lock-on ain't really working for me, feels a little too FPS / dual stick shooter, I like the the ability to auto-lock and flip thru multiple baddies in a fire-fight.
Its HARD. I died in the first mission THREE times. I think I've only done one mission where I didn't die. The game starts out fast furious and by only the 3rd or 4th mission you've got 3 stars and chopper on your azz.
The phone looks real now, but the text still way too small. Why does R* think we need to read txt and emails on a little screen displayed on another little screen?

Overall this is must own game, the guys at Rockstar have proven they still have it. I know most people (myself included) were a bit bummed about Niko being stuck in NYC but GTA:5 recaptures the mojo from the GTA:SA... it feels like a continuation of that game but more polished and flowing, thus a very fitting swan song for the PS3.

You're not the only one I've seen that finds the characters unlikable but I don't get that at all. Franklin and Michael are crooks but seem like decent people. Michael genuinely cares about his family and tries to connect with them. Franklin is trying to leave the gang life behind and move up in the world to get his girlfriend back even though it's clear to everyone else it's hopeless. I'm not too far in and maybe they do something really nasty later in the game but so far I don't see what's so bad about them. Then there's the overall story arc of a talented aging criminal forced (though not all that unwillingly) back into crime and mentoring the young hood. Along with the mystery of what exactly happened with Michael and Trevor back east. Typical crime drama stuff but done well.

Yep. I just tried that myself. I chased one down until it crashed and blew open the doors with a few shots.

Out of curiosity, does this support custom soundtracks or is it like GTA IV was on the PS3 with no support for that feature?

And if it does, does it operate like it did for GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas on the original Xbox? There, your music ripped to your hard drive only played while in a vehicle and only when you selected the tape deck instead of a radio station.

You can get a sweet chopper at the government facility. I snagged a black van from the oil refinery down the road and the Feds let me right in. Was running around looking for hidden weapons and found the chopper in the roof. No resistance at all.

I've been playing this game non stop since I bought it at the midnight launch last Tuesday.I put in daily over 5 hours on average of non stop play before taking breaks to eat, sleep, rest, and take care of other personal responsibilities.

The last game that did that to me where I got so deep into it was Red Dead Redemption.

The game's story gets better the deeper you go into it.A suggestion I'll make for enjoying it more is to do the side missions in between and also do & experience the random events that pop up when the blue dots pop on the hud while driving around in free roam.R* IMHO really nailed it this time around with intertwining these with the main story line. That to me with past GTA games was a weakness. With that being said if you play the game straight through and just stick to the main story line missions then yes you won't get as much enjoyment and the game might start to feel repetitive.

Also money in the game is hard to come by. R* wasn't kidding around when they said money would play a big role in this game. Some of the properties in game I'm honestly thinking how the heck am I going to come up with 2 million, 4 million, 10 million, or 20 million for a couple of these properties without using a money glitch or cheat code ?

I'm right now at 67% complete in the game and have not beaten the main story yet.

There still is a HUGE amount to do.I barely have even scratched the surface on free roaming stuff like swimming, diving & looking for treasures, Trevor's bounty missions, car races, air plane races, car customization, etc.

And to think GTA Online comes out in less than 2 weeks eek.gif

One of my big complaints though is the controls when flying air planes & choppers. Flight school really was pissing me off mad.gif who ever on the R* team designed these controls needs to be FIRED !!! mad.gif

One of the funniest things that happened while I was playing was I switched to Trevor while free roaming and the game automatically put him in a cut scene where Trevor is at the Vanilla Unicorn strip club and is wearing nothing but his underwear and 2 strippers are running out the strip club from him

Yeah, Trevor is always stepping in some ish whenever I swap to him. My fav was catching him vomiting in a fountain dressed in nothing but sweatpants...very classy.

I think the flying controls are pretty good, but the way the screen is constantly shaking due to turbulence is kind of nauseating.

I don't agree with this statement at all.

There is plenty of variety of music genre in the game.

I listened to the following stations: West Coast Classics, Rock Radio, Space 102.3, The Low Down 91.1, and Radio Los Santos.

Rocking Britney Spears during a cop chase is just awesome for some reason. Or any of the lame pop songs really. This game is crazy good. Every hour with this game is one more bullet to the chest of the need to buy a PS4.
