I was told I could do this update from my home......???? Any body care to comment on this before I try it? Here were the instructions given to me:

To flash the projector's firmware:

1.Download DLP Composer software and the appropriate projector firmware for your projector.
2.Connect a USB cable between the computer and the projector.
3.Launch the DLP Composer software.
4.Power on the projector.
5.Choose the new firmware file and update the projector firmware.

I'm concerned that just maybe my chat adviser didn't know what he was doing.....and I don't want to brick my projector frown.gif
Thanks for any help!

I am just wondering.. did you receive or get a link for the firmware file?
Just downloaded DLP Composer Lite, should be straight forward, but won't work on the initial firmwares from 2011.

I am curious as well, even if mine is Scaler Ver. A07 (Sep 3 2011) frown.gif

FYI, last version I know is the version of may 2012. I don't think there is one from september.
In my post I just said that my beamer had a production date (quality check) stamped on september 2012.

In the service menu I see the B03 firmware which I think is the one from may 2012.

Same experience and to my understanding is how it works. Some dig it some do not, same with FI.

Is anyone using an Onkyo 818, and a PS3 with their Acer 9500? I had sent my unit in for repair, due to poor motion handling, but after getting it back and playing around with various settings I changed my PS3 24 p settings to auto, instead of on, and on the onkyo 818 from 1080p/24, 1080p (two different settings) to auto as well. This yielded the best result.

Reading the onkyo 818 thread there is a 24p big apparently, maybe this is playing the part, but I also noticed these issues before on my onkyo 605, so I don't know.

I just rented the Judge Dredd from Redbox, and the 2d bluray is also equipped for 3d, so for 1.63 you get to rent a 3d Blu.

Also, found a handful on streamed shows on Netflix in 3d.

For me i find the dynamic iris and and motion handling for the acer h9500 work perfectly for me in 2d or 3d viewing, so thumb up for acer that provide this feature on this price point of a projector.

I recall that someone posted some settings in the service menu that minimized the "brightness slider" smile.gif effect of the iris. Be careful not to overdo it as you can lose your picture and have to reset the PJ. I found the settings to be an improvement, but I still don't use it......or Frame Interpolation for that matter...

Yes to the 818 question except the PS3 part. I too read about the blip in BD with the 818 but for the life of me I cannot recreate it here. And I am no longer looking for trouble lest I find it. The same way I am not trying to find out what DLP RBE looks like. I am good and getting the mileage out of my stuff.

Just saw this 9500 on sale at Newegg for $1199. Is this that really that good of a projector for that money?  Better than HD33 or w1070 ? How noisy is the fan?

It's not that noisy. I don't hear it and sit right underneath it (though, to be fair, my hearing isn't the best). For $1200, I think it's a steal, but am not that familiar with the latest PJs anymore. Once I got the Acer, I sort of stopped staying current as this is going to last me for at least the next couple of years. I am TOTALLY happy with the picture quality.

(Edit - Also, with regard to noise, I only use eco mode and I think there's some high altitude setting I don't use because I'm about 32 feet above sea level)

I checked out your post on the 1070 thread and I think Kraine would definitely be a good source if you are deciding between the Acer and BenQ. My recollection is that the 3D of the 1070 leaves something to be desired, but that it also has an upgraded chip and longer lamp life. We all have different wants and needs and no one size fits all. 3D is a big deal to me.

I got my Acer for $1499 (no shipping and no tax). I had to go through some changes at first, but now have a stable unit and couldn't be happier. I'd love to get it for $1199, but then I wouldn't have had almost a year of fun (not to mention an extended warranty).

Hey Folks,

Looks like Art from projectorreviews.com wants to re-review the Acer with its software update.

Here's what he wrote on his blog dated 2/13/13:

"...Finally, I’m trying to bring in a new Acer H9500BD. When we reviewed (and really liked it, our biggest complaint was a minimal Color Management System, preventing a great calibration. As reported since then, Acer has expanded it into a full CMS. I would like to calibrate a new one, update our review, and see how it compares in this year’s report (it was a Best In Class winner last year."

Initially I was told through the Acer chat line that the update could be downloaded but was subsequently corrected via email from Acer (as well as several members of this forum) that it could only be done by Acer service so I sent it in, after keeping it to watch the Super Bowl (I'm in Baltimore). They had it for just a week. Should be coming back today with the latest firmware!

Quoted myself due to bad news. I recently bought Skyfall and viewed it on the 9500. Horrible 24P stutter on that BD film and the family quickly tired of my attempts to correct it so I put it to the Epson 8350 and we enjoyed the movie with no issue. No changes to the Onkyo 818 so I don't know whether this is a 9500 thing or the AVR thing. I suspect it is related to the 9500 but have no time due to work schedule to really flesh this out. I have to say this is the first time I have seen this but it was not something one would want to watch. I was disappointed when I swapped the cable to my Epson 8350 and it played fine with no other changes. Very disappointed because I like my 9500 for that sort of thing. Can't blame that on the AVR with a simple cable swap now can I? I need to dig into this now but alas my 1 year Acer warranty is up. Booo Acer for that lame warranty.

On a positive note, I watched the Dredd movie from Amazon OD the other night at my son's request because he paid for it, not 3D but I could see where there could be some good 3D in it just from watching the 2D version. Of course this movie is not for youngsters so I may try the redbox thing to see it in 3D which I have never had a problem with on the 9500. Still, disappointed with the 23.9 something or another Skyfall viewing. Major bummer. It is what it is until I figure out what is going on when I get the time. You have the information I have at present.

The key is to turn on accumotion for a few minutes then turn it off, works most of the time.

I have seen that when having the ps3 set to output 24p to the Acer. I don't do that. Some of the reviews have stated that the Acer does a bad job of converting anything and it is best to feed it 1080p60 only. That is my recommendation to anyone with this projector.

I have seen it behave the same way regardless of setting.

I have not seen any issue with 24 fps or may be I am not looking for it..

Any example movie clips that can be tested?

Game of Thrones Season 1 disc 4 ep 1.

When Tywin is skinning what appears to be an Elk, while speaking to Jaime, I can often recreate here, other times its spontaneous.

My concern is that Tiger Direct and others are selling refurbs, and I do not want to get it here and find it is pre-firmware version (which would require me to pack it back up and ship to Acer!!). I assume a new one ($1599) from NewEgg, etc would alleviate my concerns.

Did you end up buying the refurb and what firmware did it come with?

I listed one in my post. You do not have to look for the issue. You will see it immediately. It is that bad. I hope to look into this more this weekend when/if I get some time on my hands, Lots of overtime right now. Guess I should be glad I am working and getting paid right now. I suppose so I can fund this nation of entitlement where folks make almost as much money as me and don't have to work yet get bigger tax returns which really are not returns since they paid nothing in. Oh but I digress. Back to the point, I am going to try a different BD player when I get the time to swap all that out, And the recommended fixes. I will let you know how this works with Skyfall. Will also try with my new PC. Funny how I need a fix when the Epson I have just does fine.

PS BTW at first I thought I had left the unit in the 3D mode but that was not the case at all. I hope to find I did something stupid but have my doubts.

Newegg now has the 9500 listed for $999. It's tempting at that price, but the issue of not being able to get a refund, only a replacement, makes me reluctant to pull the trigger.

So worst case I get it and have to send it in to Acer?

Man that is a good price for the projector.

Pretty much since they have been paying for that as far as I know though I have not been following the thread that closely here of late. Takes roughly two weeks. Darned good price and comes with a pair of good glasses.
Newegg also adds a $100 promotional card (so one ia actually paying 900 plus tax if applicable). The Tigerdirect unit does not seem to be refurbished by manufacturer, a risk many of us are not willing to take.
