So I am going to buy a Panny 500/Sony 790 to update my older Sony (non-3D BD player) to enjoy the 3D. Assuming I dig it, I will need at least 3 more sets of glasses. What are you guys doing for 3D glasses? I searched around some to no avail. It looks like the same issues with the 1070 (144 hz, etc) will be in effect. I was planning on getting several from Monoprice as they have done well by me over the years. Any other price conscious options?

If you look around, you can probably find a review I did comparing the Dimensional Optics glasses to the Acers. Bottom line, the DOs have several advantages, but the big one {picture quality) led me to choose the Acer's and give the DOs for those who don't really care that much about PQ. The Acer's have a decidedly bluish tint which I much, much prefer. You might not notice the difference if you didn't use the Acer's first. Bottom line is that I'd cough up a few extra bucks for the Optoma 101s (don't fold up, but reportedly are comparable to the Acer's with regard to picture quality). They run about $70 a pop.

Try to buy an extended warranty. I'm pretty sure you can do that (look at my post earlier on this page).

PS Don't buy the glasses I wrote about in my previous post eek.gif

For those are interested, I found how to read SBS in 1080p/24hz without tearing : I use stereoscopic 3D from the Nvidia Panel and I use PowerDVD12 (you can choose SBS in options).

Another problem that some french users have : The remplacement of the cover lamp latch.
For many, this product broke and Acer France say that this product is not under warranty. Even after explaining that is a design flaw....
So they have to pay the new one !! Oo

Hi everyone, I'm new to this thread. I just purchased the Acer H9500BD after speding time researching. Now I'm in the hunt for the screen and the ceiling mount. My room will have a bit amount of ambient light. And I'm thinking of 100'' - 110''. So may I ask what are your choices and favorite? I don' want to spend too much on that.
Thank you for sharing

Hello all. I've had my acer a couple months, thanks again to the advice found here. But I turned it on last night to watch a movie and the brightness was fluctuating badly, especially when the scene goes from light to dark. What gives? It wasn't doing this at all the last time I used it. I switched through the presets, same thing. Cycled power, no difference. I shut it off and called Acers. They said immediately that it needed to be returfned for a firmware upgrade. I figured since I got it this last Dec, that was already done and if not, this brightness thing wouldn't have come on so suddenly. Anyway, shipping it to them this week. any ideas? Thanks

Hi, I'm new to this projector. I read the manual, however I still can't find how we can check the firmware version and How to modify the DA setting (system setting) ? What is those buttons on the remote control?
Can someone please help?
Thank you so much.

I'd check the iris setting. I suck when it comes to lingo, but there is an aperture setting that is probably the culprit. Don't send it back just yet. Hit power left left menu (or sumthin like that) and check the FW date. It should be 5/12. If it's not, send it in, but don't pay shipping no matter what you're told.

Thanks, yeah, they initially tried to get me to pay shipping, not gonna happen. I was almost sure my FW was up to date as like a few, my box had the seal broken and believe it had already been sent in for the update. But be dammed if I could find the right button combo to bring it up. I've been "chating" with Acer, but thats getting me nowhere.

I'm afraid I might have screwed something up as I wasn't happy with the picture (while watching UFC, movies were fine) so I went looking for recommended settings in here and tried a couple. Nothing seemed to make it "good" so I quit. Then the next time I turned it on I got the fluctuation.

You might try to reset to factory defaults. I "think" you unplug it and hold down the power button for 30 seconds or something like that. You'll have to go through the initial setup, but it beats having to send it in.

If this is a new unit (rather than a refurb) and you are still having problems, don't pay for shipping. Send me a PM and I can probably help you out.

I must say I am disappointed with how Acer has addressed the problems with this projector as a whole. Do not get me wrong. I am still happy with my unit but I hate to see people struggling with Acer after buying this thing. I said it before and will say it again, the thing to do would have been to recall all the units and update them all once they became aware of the problem. Sadly it does not look like they did this. They continue to sell this unit and hope the buyer is ignorant or does not notice. When noticed, they try to make the buyer pay shipping. Not good business model when there is a known problem. Just like the weak lamp door design. Yes they fixed mine under warranty as it arrived broken in a sealed factory box that way but they know the design is flawed. Telling folks to pay shipping or charging for items that are design flaws rubs me wrong. I guess I got lucky but I paid a lot more than the $999 it can be had for today. If anything other than a bulb goes wrong with this unit I will pitch it in the trash and cut my losses as it is out of warranty now. I will never buy another Acer projector for these reasons though mine is still working very well. Funny, my older Epson projector is still under warranty and it is still working well too and is my regular TV big screen viewing workhorse for the reasons that ought to be obvious by now. Not as tack sharp but good enough and no worries. Acer pretty much for 3D and there it is very good still. Also, for critical BD movies I go Acer as well as critical sports viewing, much better. Why they could not fix problems pointed out probably boils down to money and they have to live with that now. This is my current review of the unit and I apologize to any buyers who thought they were going to make this right, which they can, easily, I have one, sadly they are dragging their heels and trying to sell the unit off and be done with it. At least that is what it looks like to me because they have known what needed fixing for a long time now but this segment of their market appears to not be large enough to warrant the attention it needs to make it a segment leader.

OK, a lot of wind there. Let me see if I can summarize: this thread has all but died. This is a very capable PJ with some problems. Most have been identified and Acer has fixed the big ones with a FW update which I suspect involves a board change in the unit. Even with the old board movie viewing and 3D was very good. After the fix it was better. Why they did not fix all inventory is probably money driven but to sell that today is inexcusable when they know it is flawed. So I will say if they are selling this at $999 and it has the old pixel mapping problem still, AKA the old firmware/board, avoid it and get the new BenQ. Acer had their chance to fix this and did not. Do not buy if you ask me. Acer is selling off this inventory and is done with it. Support, while good for me, stinks now.

I fiinally got it mounted and I'm pretty pleased. I am replacing a 2006 Panny so I guess its no surprise at the leaps that have been made.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like mine was updated which was promised by TD. I suspect its important enough to give it the requisite time to send it back in for the update correct? Any shot you can help me out Cali?

Got the 790 but am waiting on the Optoma 101s I ordered. We'll see how the 3D is then.

One quick question, how do I turn off the smoothscreen (soap opera TV)?

Wonder what the final specs will be. Maybe just the same 9500 with the updated firmware?
I hope, it will contain the new DC3 chip.

Does anyone have calibrated picture settings using Brilliant Color on? The reason I am asking this is because the I find it necessary to have BC enabled due to the high amount of lumens I get, also, seemingly better detail.

I was also wondering if anyone has an Onkyo 818 they are using with their Acer. I am using some custom settings and would love to share and test your settings and mine. Thanks!

Talk about overkill, my backup is another PC altogether. Anyway, accumotion was the problem for some reason. Put the Skyfall back in on my DLP TV and it was flawless. Fired up the 9500 and it was stuttering while I could see it perfectly on the TV. Turned on accumotion to low and bam, worked fine. Turned accumotion off and still fine. So there you go and I was not ready to throw the PJ under the bus. Still very happy with this unit and that is why I still recommend it especially at $999 even with a needed FW update. I paid more and had to do it.
Thank you sir and I will buy you a drink should our paths ever cross. At the time we first watched the movie we were all settled in with snacks and drink so troubleshooting was brief and I swapped cables. All is well that ends well.

No problem, I ended up sending mine back a few months ago for this issue only to have it returned doing the same thing, but it's not the worst thing in the world, and I seem to see it less.

Something to think about with refurbished units.

My first projector was a refurbed InFocus X-1 from Tiger Direct. The machine ran fine for years. I don't think I ever changed the bulb (it did get pretty dim). So my experience with refurbished projectors was very positive.

But I'm not so sure I would get a refurbed Acer.

The reason the X-1 was so good as a refurb was probably because the defect was in the user not the machine. Those early DLPs had slow color wheels and gave many people rainbows. Also customers didn't know to check first at a store to see if they were rainbow sensitive. So I imagine Tiger Direct had to take back many projectors that were perfect in the sense that they were exactly what InFocus had manufactured but not a good fit for some rainbow sensitive people.

But today customers simply don't buy DLP projectors until they've determined whether they see colors artifacts or not. That means that the units will have been returned for something that is wrong with the machine. I love my Acer but it does have some faults, the worst of which is that spontaneously shuts down for no reason.

I see that new units are very cheap now from Amazon. That's what I'd get today if I were buying another. Or maybe I would sell my car and get a Runco.

Are the units selling from amazon right now "fixed" or are they all required to be sent in for the update?

They "should" have the updated firmware, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. If you have to send it in, Acer will pay shipping both ways. I know people are getting tired of hearing me say (write) this, but if you send it in, pay FedEx $20 (approx) to pack it up. When they pack it, they insure it and you get a nice box in case you need to send it back in.

Thanks InCali. You've been a big help in this thread. I'm seriously considering this pj but since I have to import it from the USA to Canada I'm sure it will be on my dime to send it in for the fix (if it needs it). Maybe I'll contact the vendor and see what they say.

So do we have any experts out there who know what the advantages of using the DC3 chip are? I know it's supposed to provide better native contrast (maybe we won't need to use the iris many of us have complained about??), but I'm not sure if there are other advantages as well. Native contrast is a big deal, but I don't have much of a problem with my Acer (DC2 chip). Of course I also thought the picture was nice and sharp before the firmware fix, so that tells you what I know.

I'm trying to dig around and see if I can get an official comment from Acer regarding this new projector. I'll let everyone know what I find out, but I'm keeping my 9500 for awhile.....probably quite awhile.

I've sent an email to Acer asking who pays if you are in Canada. I should hear back soon.

Sorry for quoting myself, but I think this is relevant.

Acer service (USA) is unaware of the 9501, but that isn't uncommon for service not to know about newly released products (esp if it's not going to be available in the USA for awhile). He did a check and didn't see any info in Acer (USA) press releases, so Acer can't comment on it any further at this time.

Generally speaking, if and when a projector is announced for the US, it would be available on http://us.acer.com. If he sees anything down the road, he'll let me know.

Maybe some of our firends across the great Atlantic can get some specs or quotes from Acer???

Acer US will pay for shipping both ways as Canada and US are under the same service umbrella.

Got to be getting close to new bulb time for some. I probably have 800 hours on my projector, maybe more. Has anyone bought a new bulb for their 9500 and replaced it?

Does anyone know if the initial Acer warranty covers a bulb during the initial warranty period? It seems like it would unless there's a specific exclusion. I know replacement bulbs have a very limited warranty.
I think bulbs usually have a 90-180 day warranty; however, there have been aftermarket warranty products that also covered the bulb for the life of the warranty.
for me i would change my acer projector to something like DC3 chip when my bulb is getting wear out.
