Looking for a Receiver with a Specific Feature

I live in an apartment building where the walls are thin and have no soundproofing. Whenever I watch a movie I am always worried about neighbours complaining about the loudness (it has happened before).

I am looking for a receiver that has a specific feature. It should be able to control the variation of the sound level and keep in within a user selective range.

The sound in most movies can go up and down very often. I have to constantly watch out and be ready to reduce the volume once it becomes loud, then increase back when it becomes quiet and cannot be clearly heard. It certainly does not let me enjoy the movie.

Do you know of a receiver with which I can control the max and min sound levels? That is when the movie gets loud, the receiver automatically detects the sound level and lower to stay below a max level?

Thanks.

Sounds like you're looking for one with something like Pioneer's Dynamic Range or Midnight controls, many have similar afaik but under various names. Of course then there's just keeping the volume at an appropriate level Glad I live in a house for that reason, don't like to hear neighbors and vice versa

Audyssey Dynamic Volume can do this and is offered in Denon, Marantz, and Onkyo AVRs. Note also it's available on some TVs as well. Dolby Volume can also do this but is offered on fewer models.

I thought certain DVD players also have this feature.

Check out Harman/Kardon..
They were the 1st with Dolby Volume and it is much better than Audyssey Dynamic Volume, last year's model 2600 & 3600 had Dolby Volume and are available at significant discounts.. Also their new 2650 & 3650 include Dolby Volume as well..

Just my $0.02..

Just curious, are Harman/Kardon the only company which uses Dolby Volume?

Is it possible to connect two sets of speakers to these receivers (which I can do with my current Sony receiver)?

Thanks.

Anthem MRX receivers, Onkyo 709 and up and the Denon 4311 all have Dolby Volume. Dyamic volume works pretty well for me. Audyssey is coming out with a new feature that will be really helpful but I don't know when it will be out. It's called Audyssey LFC. Here is a link to more info:

I noticed Onkyo TX-NR709 and HT-RC370 models have both Audyssey and Dolby volume so that I can try both and see which one gives me a better satisfactory result. Price wise, they are not more expensive than Harman Kardon receivers. Is there a reason I should prefer one over the other brand?

I got a deal on an Onkyo TX-NR809 and decided to go ahead and order it. I am not an audio geek at all and it looks like I need to go through a steep learning curve of all the features and adjustments of this receiver. I am going to try both Audyssey and Dolby volume to see which one works best for my needs.

Thanks to all for their helpful guidance.

Cool, make sure you post back on which one you prefer. I would recommend reading through the first post of the Audyssey thread so you can get a good grasp on the setup. It was very helpful to me when I got my first Audyssey receiver.
