Is anybody using Plex?

Recently Plex had some huge updates - new Windows client, updated with latest XBMC code, myPlex site to access media online etc. I was reading about it and it seems very nice - they have a dedicated server, new plugins etc.

I know many people here have asked how to have a centralized XBMC database, Plex seems designed for that.

I've been using it with my Android phone and Roku box. With the update, it's got a little easier, and not there is Windows front end. Seems to be working well. I'm have some issues with the online video content, but I'm not too worry about it.

i read that it will be working with my Revue after it gets the update

i installed it last night, thinking i could play around with it and maybe use the new media center plugin on the 360 (i couldnt find definitively that it wouldnt work)

after installing the media server i was taken to a web page interface that hogged all 4gb of my ram. since i couldnt find the server on my Revue I uninstalled it for the time being.

im not really good with these front ends. I downloaded Media Browser a few times but cant seem to figure it out. too much effort just to replace the stock movie gallery.

i figure ill give it another try after i get my Revue update

Is Plex able to play files that are on a NAS? I have all of my media on a FreeNAS server and I can watch the files using xbmc so I assume that since plex is based on xbmc that it can do this. Is this correct? Also does the plex application on roku all you to do this also?

Yes Plex will play media over the network. With XBMC to share the library, you have to install MySQL and manually configure each client. With Plex the server is separate and Plex clients will find it automatically. All the Plex clients are able to do this.

I've been using it on my macs for about 3 yrs, and on my iPhone and iPad since Plex for iOS came out.

No TrueHD/LPCM/DTS-MA capability, but everything else is really friggin' easy and user-friendly, with only very rare crashes or other annoyances. My son is 2 and a half yrs old and can navigate to and play his movie collection w/o problems (though that may not be a good thing ). Works very well for multi-room setups as well.

It's also really simple wrt metadata editing, scraping, etc.

Here's the page I made in 30 seconds for the Duke-Butler National Championship game. It's kinda fun to do stuff like this for sporting events, and it takes no time at all w/ the Media Manager:

Yes, you can use plex and xbmc with a NAS. When you setup the PMS, you tell it where your media is, and then let it scrape. I have both XBMC and Plex setup. I didn't install SQL, unless either Plex or XBMC installed it.

I'm not sure what you're asking about the Roku. Once you have PMS setup, and libraries setup and scraped, the rest are just front ends. The Roku just has a front end. All I did is tell it where the PMS was in my network, and set the video quality I wanted to use. I didn't need to do anything with my libraries.

Thanks for the feedback. So sounds like I would need to install pms and have that running at all times on a particular machine. Don't think I'd like that as much since I would prefer to have services running on my Freenas box which is kept on all the time. I mainly use Xbmc as a front end and have it setup to look at my remote files. Ideally I would want to use some sort of box ( roku, wdtv, apple tv ) in my bedroom to watch my remote media and Netflix. Sorry for getting off topic.

I've considered it seriously but still has a couple of features missing that I need.

1. The ability to play BD .iso's or at least launch PDVD11 to play them. I don't think it is even very good at DVD .iso's
2. I would need to run the media server part on WHS and it really doesn't support it well.

I have my PMS on the PC I do all my DVR recordings. For some reason, my machines don't wake for records, so I just have the PC running 24/7. My PC doesn't use a lot power, so it's not an issue for me. I know there are people who use NAS with Plex. I would suggest asking about how their setup is, or read the wiki/manual. There is Linux PMS, so maybe you might be able to put it on the NAS. It's something I haven't had to fiddle with myself.

As for DVDs, the PMS has has nothing to do with it. The front end is a different story. I haven't played a DVD on Plex since I was still on OSX and using Plex 8.5. The windows client probably is fine. But really, we so many option for DVD players, that should not really big a killer. And Plex has the abliity to add applcation, such as DVD players if need. I haven't used it. And most Plex/XBMC users don't really play discs. They're either some form of rips--mkv, iso, avix, and so forth.

I tried to do the exact same thing yday, my revue couldn't find the PMS (installed on my Win 7 desktop) either...Was it supposed to work BEFORE the Honeycomb update on the revue?

My ultimate goal is to install PMS on a NAS and d/l and install the PMS client from the Android market on the Revue (once it gets the Honeycomb update).

Alternatively, I am deciding on whether to build a low power PC (atom based?) since I have read that currently the PMS only works on Intel based NAS'es, not the lower cost Marvell based ones, that is a bummer as the Intel based NAS'es are expensive and for that cost I could build a PC for 24/7 server operation and also have the flexibility to add hard drives etc....

Any suggestions would be welcome.

make sure you're signed up and sign in to MyPlex (make sure to hit the publish box(. It suppose to do all the networking setup.

As for the rest, I don't know. I suggested going to the Plex Forums. I've seen your questions over there, and may have the answers for you.

I've been using Plex for a while now and since they came up with the myPlex setup, it has made remote streaming a breeze. I used to use and still use Air Video on my iPad, but for the Android tablet, its Plex. I have the Plex Media Server installed on a Windows machine mainly because it houses the media and on the router open port forwarding to that machine. Once you sign on to myPlex, you can then access it remotely without any problems. Also it now has a Windows front end quite similar to XBMC.

Can I stream media via my network to x-boxes, ps3's, and linksys dma2200's? I currently stream these units via my network using W7MC and mediabrowser.

No Xbox (I assume you mean 360) or PS3 front end clients to my knowledge. Plus, you would have to hack them to get it on there, which would void your warranty, and probably get you banned on their online networks. No idea what the Linksys DMA2200 is, so I can't comment. My assumption, probably no client.

Plex is two parts. One part is the server that runs on a PC that maintains your media, which will stream/transcode your media to a front end client running on device--PC, phone, stb. The other part is the front end client. It lets you browse your media libraries and play it. The front end client's a specific on what they can be on. If you don't or can't have both, Plex is useless to you.

Don't forget, they do have forums, so they may have clients for your devices, but you need to check.

Hate to bump after a month of inactivity, but I just started using Plex a few days ago.

I had previously used Boxee and XBMC, but was upset about the inability to sync "unwatched" shows between multiple HTPCs. I realized I could do this with a MySQL database, but I currently have a Server>Client situation at home, therefore making Plex a very easy fit for my lifestyle.

2 Things that I don't like.
• Windows skins.
I imagine this will get better as more people use it and start making skins for it. It seems the XBMC ported skins have much less functionality than the Plex versions. From what I understand, the XBMC Skinning is much better than Plex. I hope that this isn't the case in the future.
• No ability for DTS-HD and TrueHD bitstreaming.
I also imagine that the Plex developers will try and keep the client up-to-date with the XBMC client. (This function is supposed to be available in Eden)
