It looks as though Meridian may soon be releasing their long awaited firmware updates for their legacy and also new products. Information as to how it will be released is forthcoming. There is a thread running now on Hitchiker's Guide to Meridian where there is more information.

Sometimes you feel like a sap when you buy high end.. I thought theta was dead last!

The high end certainly isn't what it used to be...

What's supposed to be included with the new firmware? I don't like that you have to go through a dealer to get it. Meridian has contributed a lot to the high-end with many great products and technologies.

Meridian has now put up a post with all the info about the updates. There still seems to be information yet to come about the distribution of the firmware updates. It is great that they are applying them to many of their products.

It is. Many of the older products were great performers. It adds value to all products when a company continues to support products that are no longer revenue streams. It is a sign of good faith.

It is not bad at all for Meridian trying to avoid software abuse (maybe no public download possible) or to get customers closer together to dealers (up date by dealers), although some distributers are just plain arrogant people, it is more confusing that Meridian involved in digital hard and software has still the dream of protecting something in a digital world, which we all know appears to be impossible. You cannot escape the matrix....

BTW: my 50" cinemascope TV said "hello" to me yesterday (permanently connected to LAN) and asked, if it should install for me the latest firmware. What a nice charm of this little toy. I said yes. Life can be so easy.....

Got me all excited, thinking that maybe Meridian had come up with a way to get HD audio to the old 568.

This is for my brother. He has the 568 and DSP6000's. I will let him know about the 621. Thank you.

what possible "software abuse" could come of releasing a firmware update to the public? it's not like it's useful to anyone who doesn't have the equipment...

or are they charging for it?

It is free but this promotes contact between user and dealer.

Also, not everyone is capable of updating the firmware without screwing up.

^^^

yea, that i can certainly understand... makes a lot of sense from that standpoint.... especially the "get the customer in the store" part...

just can't figure out the "abuse" part... can't imagine there's a huge market for pirated meridian firmware out there...

You can get in the meantime second party software for certain Meridian decoders (apodizing filters may ring a bell). Wonder if that would have happened, if the software would have been run by an installer programm instead of a downloadable file, if you know what I mean Also for speakers there have been some manipulations...

In the end all stuff I do not care about. I care for my room and 16Bit/44,1/48.

The most rediculous statement over at the hitchhiker forum on the availablility tactics of Meridian was from a member saying, if you live somehwere in the outskirts, with no dealer near by, then how would you expect to stay up-to date.....Hello....this is the 2011's year after the Lord's son and we have exactly for that the internet and GSM/3G networks. You can almost fetch a free downloadable firmware package all over the world. That is exactly the benefit of the digital world. You can stand on Mount Everest and make a firmware download. So pls Meridian, make it free and downloadable for everybody

I've been reading up on the Sooloos System - specifically the Control 15 and the Media Core 200. Love the 15's interface, and the specs are great. Has anyone had any experience with these Sooloos systems?
Among all the music/media players I have used for music- Sooloos interface is among the best out there especially in terms if UI, searching for, or choosing a music album at your finger tips. Once you use Sooloos it is very tough to go back to other set-ups IMHO.

Sooloos system is unfortunately a sandbox-i.e. you have to import all your albums into Sooloos format (easy, time consuming) but you will love it. Highly recommend Control 15+twinstore combo. They sound best if you use Meridian digital out to connect to meridan 808.3 or 861v6 using ID40 card.

Kishore

The 621 will only work with the 568.2mm. It will not work with the 568.1 or the 568.2.

I suppose, although both OPPO (particularly) and Lumagen seem to manage the process .....

Well, it's unauthorized hacking ....

Although, from my perspective software/firmware hacking is really just a logical extension of the age-old practice of equipment modding. How is modifying firmware for a presumed performance enhancement any different than swapping out capacitors or power-supply components? The former clearly will void any remaining warranty, but then, so does the latter.

Yes but Meridian clings to RS-232 on much of their equipment and requires external loader software.

We do it on cars all the time.
