Hey guys. I have the bug to acquire some speakers. I just got some ORBS in the mail for my living room setup (www.orbaudio.com) to please the wife, and I like how they sound. With a sub I like them better than my current bookshelf speakers. They seriously sound pretty big!
But now they're bringing out the imperfections in my cheapy 12-inch sub. I believe it's a Dayton from Parts Express. My brother is loaning it to me til he gets his own place
These Orbs just don't do much below the 100hz range, so I need a sub that handles some of the upper frequencies better. This sub is a bit boomy. It works OK for music with bookshelfs that already handle 70-80 hz, but isn't cutting it with the Orbs.
Now I know AVS tends to be a high-end forum, but I am really hoping to stick to less than $200 and 8 inches, or maybe 10 inches in a very small box. It's also kind of hard to test out subwoofers, so I'm hoping for some advice here.
Maybe this size and price range is blasphemy around here, but I am convinced there are decent options (http://www.amazon.com/Energy-ESW-C8-.../ref=pd_cp_e_3
) ??. Looks like these will sell out before I get to them.
I'm also considering the Lava 8 sub. It seems to be a little on the tall side, but since it'll be behind a chair that shouldn't matter as much as the other dimensions. http://www.lavasubs.com/8_inch/power...subwoofer.html
I've heard good things about Lava.
I just want something that blends in well with the orbs without going all farty and boomy. I'm not looking to shake the whole block. I'm also not interested in the Orb audio "Super 8" sub that comes with various Orb packages, because I've heard many complaints about the amplifier in those subs blowing out. It's also a little more than I want to spend ($284 for the "orb outlet" cosmetically blemished option).
Seems like you can't really test drive subwoofers as easily as with speakers, so any advice is appreciated.
I want to use this equally for music and movies probably. This is just a 2.1 setting (lots of wife compromise here). And I don't want to put a lot of money into a sub if I'm only doing 2.1 with Orbs. BUT I want it to sound pretty damn good anyway. And not take up a lot of space.
Hard to please I guess!
Thanks for any advice. and I'm checking Craigslist daily!
