Moroder's Metropolis

I'm surprised I haven't seen a dedicated thread for this release yet, outside of the "Coming Soon" list. After being a no-show on dvd, Giorgio Moroder's take on Fritz Lang's classic work is being released by Kino on blu ray this month:

Yawn...
Sorry nothing personal but this version is a hatchet job with a sh!tty soundtrack, imo

Yeah, I thought no thread as no one cared enough.
This coming from someone who will make a thread for nearly everything, even if I dislike it.

After being properly introduced to Metropolis via last year's Kino release, I'm actually very curious about this version of it. I think I'll have to hold out for a sale or rent it, though, because even though I do want to see it I'm not sure I'll like it.

It was the first version I saw. Therefore, it is my favorite. I absolutely love this is being released.

I'm looking forward to seeing this again, too. I saw it in the theater a couple of times and had a beta tape.

The idea of putting a techno/pop score to Metropolis is a good one. You can argue with the selections: pop music is often of only transient interest, but on the other hand you never know how it is going to sound decades later. You just have to try it.

This is a shorter cut than we have now, but that is all they had at the time. He did insert some surviving stills to help flesh out the story. Replacing the intertitles with subtitles speeds things up a bit. The image is tinted as was commonly done in the silent era, although I don't know if it was ever done with Metropolis.

I have a review of the Kino Complete Metropolis with thumbnails here.

This version is a lot of fun. Not necessarily good, but for lovers of the film it's certainly worth a look.

Lang didn't like tinting and all of his silents from Mabuse the Gambler on were shown in B&W in Germany. But he couldn't stop them from doing tinted versions for export, and there were some tinted prints of Metropolis (although tinting was on its way out by that time).

I'm generally a stickler for the "proper" unmolested version of a film but something like Moroder's Metropolis falls into a different category. I consider it to be a separate work of art using Metropolis as the source material. It's not Metropolis, it's Giorgio Moroder's Metropolis.

I'm a car guy and I like to visit car shows during the summer. I can appreciate a perfectly restored 1951 Mercury but I can also appreciate a well crafted '51 Mercury "Lead Sled" custom. Both represent different creative interpretations of common source material.

It is not necessary to dislike one in order to like the other.

I was ecstatic when news surfaced of the missing footage, and the restored version was a day one purchase for me. That being said, I think this one has a place on my shelf as well (already have the laserdisc...). As mentioned, it really is a derivative work, not in the same category as "special editions" so widely criticized.

If this version supplanted the footage from the original, or if it was the only one made available, I would be the first to cry foul. But as it stands I feel it complements the original nicely; not to mention playing a role in the resurgenece of Lang's work in the public eye.

I'm probably going to wait untll the price comes down a bit, then buy it. I know the purists have mini strokes when they think about the Moroder version, but in some ways it does work. I always like it when the rules get bent a bit and this version certainly does that.

Strangely enough, the "modern" soundtrack sounds more dated than the score on the recently released restored version.

A number of unnecessary, personal comments have been deleted. Further like comments will result in more severe action.

I'm glad I ordered this, but it really should have simply been included with last years release as it's sort of a supplemental addendum type thing...

That would never have happened in a million f*cking years.

I could see Criterion doing it if they had had the materials, but that's the only way I could see it happening (that said, a sort of Ultimate Metropolis set could/would have been rather nifty).

Amazon has put this BD under review and stopped selling it directly. Anyone know what the problem is?

I saw that on another title for a while: THE EXORCIST, which has been out quite a while. I think it is a canned message caused by some database or inventory problem.

My copy shipped already.

People might have ordered it without knowing what it was.
