I own a pair of CLS-12's (or something like that). This seems to be the model that replaced them.

A Technical Pro stereo reciever/amp (crap no doubt), and they're connected to the back of my computer.

I think this is the current model of what I have. Mines a 1000 watt one...

When I play this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhmC3EhS7D4&hd=1

I'm not getting all that much bass. The woofer moves around pretty darn good but the bass output is not at all what you would expect.

Question is, what's the limiting factor in the setup? Does the amp or speaker just not go that low or what?

Some of the tones in the in bass i love you are below 20 hz and the human ear only can hear 20hz - 20k hz besides your speakers if like the XLS-12's roll off at 40hz so means the volume below those frequencies is little.

Also your receiver is only 2x 70 watts... The 1500 watts peak power is a fib in which they purposely fudged the numbers

The speakers you have are very capable speakers. The amp you're using is questionable. They can perform good in a 2.0 configuration, but these speakers will really perform well with a subwoofer in a 2.1 configuration with good amplification. I know my way around CV's. I own a lot of them. Many from the CLS line.

The Cerwin Vegas don't go that deep (-10db @ 37Hz). You are seeing the effects of the sub attempting to play a ~20Hz tone but not actually being able to give out substantial output at that range.

Yeah, that's what I figured. The woofer simply wont go that low (which is fine, it's not a sub after all) and the amp is cheeze.

I'll upgrade the amp some time in the new year. Something with an optical input. Harmon Kardon or Yamaha probably.

Thanks

For truly powering the Cerwin Vega's I would get the harmon kardon hk3490 stereo amp with 120watt x 2 and hk doesn't lie about their power ratings

Sure, but upgrading the amp won't make those speakers play any lower.

Yeah, that looks good. I'll keep an eye out for a sale.
