Looking for bipolar surround recommendations

Okay, I'm in the process of replacing my entire 5.1 system with new stuff. So far I've purchased the SVS SCS-02 "front three" package (really nice, I'm surprised these aren't more popular) and just ordered a HSU VTF-2 mk4 sub. The surrounds are the final piece. I'm sold on getting bipolars, the room is small and I'm tired of being blasted in the head when not sitting in the ideal position. Here's my criteria:
  • Bipolar
  • They must be bookshelf style. No wall mounting, I'll show you why in a minute.
  • Not too big
  • $500 budget for the pair

I was ready to go with the Definitive SR-8040BP. They're the perfect size, good company, fits my budget. However, I'm worried about a mismatch with my other speakers since they use aluminum tweeters versus silk tweeters in my SVS stuff. Is this really even an issue?

By the way this is where they're going, and why I'm looking for bookshelf instead of wall mounted (sorry for the weird angle, the picture was originally taken for something else but you can see the speaker wire popping out where I plan on putting them):

You could check out Polk Audio RXi A4s or A6's - they are made for wall mounting, but in-store they are generally just sitting as a bookshelf would. As I assume you are in the US, you could likely get them on Polk's EBay store or elsewhere for a a decent price - certainly under $500 for the pair - I can even get the larger ones here in Canada for under $500 - when on sale.

Thanks, those look good. What downside is there (if any) to just having one woofer?

Any more suggestions would be appreciated. I'd still like to hear some opinions on using those Definitive speakers in my setup

Why not stick with SVS and use the SSS-02 for surrounds? They will perfectly match your system and they are bi-polar speakers that can be wall mounted or can be stood on a shelf.

Get the DefTech's. You will NOT be disappointed. I have them running with 3 Klipsch speakers upfront and they complement them very nicely. Mind you, I have them working in a Great Room with a Def. Tech sub as well.

I'm wondering why you're mounting them back there instead of on the wall, which looks like a perfect spot for a surround speaker. Is the other side of the couch a problem? (i.e., no wall over there?)

Yea, they're kind of huge though and SVS still recommended leaning them against something for support.

Still my first choice right now, think I might just go with them.

Thanks

Well, there is a wall there but its much closer, I'd like to have them at the same distance. Also I already have the holes drilled and ran wire

Distances don't need to be equal as long as you have a room correction program on your AVR. What is important is where the speakers are in relation to where you sit. They should be at 90-120 degrees from your listening position and 2-4 foot above your ears. Use the walls if you can.

By 90-120 degrees from your listening position, do you mean essentially that they should be even with your ears or behind you slightly?

Definitely would recommend wall mounting dipole/bipole speakers. I have two different setups in my house. One has Def Tech BPX and the other Jamo sur.8 ($500/$200) respectively. I am VERY tempted to order and try the Emotive X-Ref towers/center/and dipole surrounds. The Emotiva ERD-1 also get rave reviews and are priced at $250 pair !! Hard to beat the price relative to the reviews they have gotten in the past.

BTW, in my opinion, rear/surrounds don't have to match as much as the front 3 have to. I've mix and matched with great success.
