Your helmet modification is quite elaborated, I was thinking about doing the same, but then I remembered that I already had plenty of struggles with certain helmets in the past, so I refused using them at all. Regarding dismantling, I guess I would not dare to demount the unit, since I fear that the optical alignment might be suffering after reassembling it again.

Besides, I am already at the maximum of the PD correction, so it is questionable whether individual alignment can help. Blurry screen edges are mostly annoying when displaying my desktop, while it is not such a huge problem while watching movies etc.
Anyway, I am not the biggest mechanical tinkerer, so I just tried to counterbalance the unit a bit and thus far it as appropriately adequate, even though far away from being the maximally achievable optimum:
