For Transformers we tried to retain real world depth cues while Arthur Christmas is designed to have more hyper-stereo effects. Arthur Christmas is also designed to have a fair about of volume and depth in the environments and backgrounds.
Since Arthur Christmas takes place in these spectacular environments, I wanted to expand the depth so that the audiences would have more detail to view.
I wanted to allow them to see all the little components on Arthur's desk, the tinsel, the cutout paper garland hanging from the ceiling, and all the gadgets and components in the control room. We even paid special attention to all the ice for the reflections and refractions.
In addition, I wanted to make sure that the characters were full, round, and had shape to them. I wanted to make sure that the audience got a sense of the detail that went into all of the characters hair and clothing.
Arthur's sweater looks great in 2D, but in 3D you get an even better sense of the subtle details in the fabric. If we were to make those shots shallow then I think we would have lost some of the subtle details that really help each shot come alive.
