Hi Lewdoog,

Please, do *not* hesitate to email if you continue to have setup issues or the XS30 just isn't doing it for you. Sometimes it tough to gauge exactly how the XS30 will perform compared to different subs when there is no response/output data available on it. This particularly true when focusing on a narrow frequency bandwidth or a single example of source material. What source material are you using to gauge "ULF" performance? While the XS30 extends quite low in most rooms if the other subwoofer has a significantly different frequency response "shape" it is certainly possible that the XS30 can sound "lean" in a narrow bandwidth by comparison. If time allows this weekend I would rewatch a couple of your favorite films with good bass to get a more complete picture of the current performance of the XS30.

Also, how large is the room and are there any large openings to other areas of the home?

When you guys are doing your subcrawl are you using the avr's test tone?

I used the test tone with an spl meter as well as some bass heavy music I am familiar with to find my location.

A question to PSA (or anybody else); in the case of a XS30, what qualifies as corner placement.

The sub has two drivers. Assuming placement with one driver having a rear facing advantage, how close and square on the corner does a rear facing driver need to be to the corner, so as to be considered a corner placement?

In our situation, using the above example, the sub would be to the right of center corner placement by about four feet.

Tom recommended me to put the XS30 in the corner diagonally so each driver is facing the wall equally. I did this and have noticed an improvement. Although I had to reconfigure my mains so it would fit in the corner.

Thanks for the recommendation. I was afraid your answer would be the rational reply. No can do. Both corners are occupied by "great" chairs and behind one is a plant stand with lamp on it. The other doesn't have a lamp behind it because it's a recliner. Due to WAF, there's no ability to reconfigure the room. The only location is to the inside right and left of each great chair. I like the PSA, XS30 because of the dual 15" (front/back firing) subwoofers.

I was hoping to read; "No problem dude. Four feet to the right and left, you're still good."..

Based on what you posted, I went in and did a measure to check and see what kind of wiggle room I have. With adjustments, I could place one sub behind the stationary chair that has the lamp behind it but I'd need to make the sub do double duty with a book on it to be used as a lamp standt.

By placing the sub in a corner as you suggested, how much more energy would be transmitted through the wall as there's a bedroom on the other side of the wall?

I tried listening to this last night with my apple TV and though youtube and it sounded like crap. Do I have to burn it onto a CD?

You beat me to it. Thats the tune I was playing when I felt the floor pulsating upstairs in the kitchen. I'm afraid I'm gonna have to replace some of the ladies nick knacks after this weekend

I've finally got my dual xv15 dialed in like I like. Here are a couple pictures - from REW that show just how well they are working for me. FYI My room is about 20x33x10 so these can really put out some decent spl. My goto test for subs is the Telarc Digital Sampler Vol 1 recording of Bach's Toccatta and Fugue in D minor - check out the respectable peaks at 18 hz and 25 hz - those are some big pipes on the organ.

I don't have that particular recording but that particular piece will both challenge a system's weakness as the system "WILL" reciprocate and reveal" weaknesses in the recording.

I had to go to a second recorded version as the first version was terribly mastered. In the case of the second version, it was acceptable but at several places in the piece, the recording put my wife "...right next to the edge." Nice recommendation.

I am assuming you got your issues worked out then or did the subs just need a break in?

I'm wondering why this would make a difference as far as the positioning. I have tinkered with both myself. Someone brought this up earlier which reminded me of an article on data-bass.com that talked about when measuring the epik empires it really didn't matter their orientation.

I think a little of both. On a side note....

OMFG, the final battle scene in How to Train Your Dragon with this sub.....holy hell. My back feels like it just got out of one those vibrating chairs you see at the mall. I ain't exaggerating, my body feels numb from all the shaking!

I've found something similar to be true. If I turn my XS30 45 degrees with one of the drivers firing into the corner I get a noticeably better result.

Haha I'm watching it right now as I type this. My new xv15 is in a whole new level than the pb12 I had. This thing is insane!!!

Ideally, try to experiment with both subwoofer location AND driver orientation as much as time allows. We can make "best guesses" and offer what *often* works best. But at the end of the day each room is different and so much depends on variables like dimensions, seating locations, etc...that the only way to optimize everything is through a bit of trial/error.

I can tell you I feel a small to good amount of improvement in the ULF when I did this. I have learned that just moving a sub a few inches can change how it feels and sounds. I imagine doing this your just moving the null spot away from the LP which in return is making it sound better.

Ya know, reading things like this is only making the wait (for my XS30) that more agonizing. Keep it coming though, good to have an idea what to expect. And Tom, build those Subs already
