I have 3 of the XV15's behind one of my couches, it is not the couch that is the main listening position. Last night I laid on that couch and watched Dredd. This was the first time I have watched a movie from that seat and I don't think I will do it again. It was frightening. I have the 3 XV15's ports facing the couch. I was wondering if I was doing damage to the couch. It felt like it was about to lift off of the ground. Several months ago we had neighbors over and they sat on this couch and we watched the Avengers. At one point my neighbor's wife jumped off of the couch like she was shocked by electricity. She sat on the floor for the rest of the movie! It is an unsettling feeling waiting for the next boom while sitting there. I may have to rearrange my setup biggrin.gif

I dare you to watch total recall on that couch. I was thinking of trying a near field placement with the XS30. Has anyone tried this yet? Have it behind the couch?

I just got my longer sub cable in from Monoprice an did a sub crawl. The best sound was nearfield right next to my listening position. Just rewired everything and ran Audyssey and threw in War of the Worlds. WOW. Null issue rectified wink.gif! Definitely try the nearfield placement if you can.

Maybe I'm just new to the sub scene, maybe I will become USED to the bass and want more later, but for now I am totally satisfied...and my room is huge.

Duals of any sub will have an inherent significant advantage over a single of any other sub, 3 to 6 dB of increased output plus the potential for flatter frequency response across a larger seating area.
And there's no substitute for smooth bass response and add more output.

According to Tom V, dual xv-30 = 3 xv-15

thaks av addiction... and 2 XS15 compared with one XS30? my room is 22" x 17" x 8" sealed (without windows) and i wonder if two XS15s can shake the room with ULF for movies...

Your room around 2992 cubic ft with dual xv-15, it’s more than enough.
My room is around 3800 cubic ft and with one side opens to dinning room and kitchen. Sometimes I have to turn down the bass because it’s so loud.
A 2992 cubic ft seal room without window is perfect environment for audio. XS-30 is a dual driver, sealed subwoofer. One XS-30 will be fine for your room; and you have an option upgrade to dual later.

But whenever you are comparing sealed to ported/passive radiator, you have to accept and consider that each will have their advantages.

2 XS15s will give you smoother response with less nulls and peaks than a single XS30 (true for all subs single vs. dual). I have dual XS15s in my ~3500 cu,.ft. space and they will blow you out of your seat (after proper placement)! But, if you're thinking of dual XS30s - even better.

im pretty new to the study as well.. have built a few bass traps and diffusors.. they really work.. tons u tube vids out they and info..

the 3 main typical acoustic issues are

1 bass resonance

2 reverb time

3 direct reflections..

speed of sound sound to ears direct then sound from reflections hits ear different times causing distortion in your head...

reverb clap hands in stairwell

bass resonance put tower speaker in corner and turn up volume..

its ez stuff just start googling..

XsOk guys I'm confused. Remember that video I made of my HSU VTF3 MK4 with the Underworld Awakening scene with the super lycan and the cup of water. Well I played the same scene with the XS30 and the water didn't move...at all....like tiny little ripples. I don't understand. I know I have this thing dialed in because I just got done watching Total Recall and my god, at end of it with the fighting scenes in "the fall".....I literally felt like I got off a rollercoaster ride! My HSU never did that, it just felt boomy during that part. So my question is how come the XS30 ain't moving this water, I know for damn sure its more powerful from other scenes I have tried. I also have tried moving the cup of water around. I even placed it ON TOP of the sub and yet nothing!

My guess is that the enclosure on the XS30 is more inert and prolly better braced than the HSU, that there is less vibration moving through the enclosure.

Isn't the XS30 dual opposed? If so, the drivers pretty much cancel out any vibrations in the cab. Another interesting benefit of dual opposed subs...I think BossoBass had a "wine glass" clip of the same thing with this subs cool.gif

Dual opposed cancels out any tendency for the sub to move back and forth in reaction to the motion of the cones, which could cause a glass of water to vibrate atop it. It doesn't do anything to reduce vibrations of the cab panels, other than allowing smaller panels to be used compared to a cab with both woofers on the same baffle. Smaller means stiffer.

Because the table isn't vibrating. cool.gif
A single driver speaker, or one with multiple drivers on the same baffle, will move backwards when the cones extend outward, and back again when the cones move inward. That's Newton's Third Law of Motion at work, and a glass of water atop the speaker will vibrate as its inertia resists that movement. With dual opposed construction both cones move outward and inward in unison, so as one wants to push the cabinet in one direction the other will try to push it in the opposite direction with equal force. The net effect is that the cab doesn't move at all.

Ok I get that part. Buy I'm most concern is about the table. Because earlier I said the HSU vibrated the table like T-Rex but the XS30 isn't. But I know the XS30 is more powerful, but I don't get why this is happening.

Bill, What smoken is talking about is a cup of water on a side table approx 15 feet away from the sub. On his older sub he could make the water ripple, but not on the new one.
