From what I recall talking to Tom about comparing the XS15 with the XS30, he said you would almost need 3 XS15s to equal one XS30.

Which would make the XS30 one heck of a great deal. biggrin.gif

So after doing days of researching I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on the XV15. I was just wondering there was some kind of set up guide or just anything I should know about before enjoying the experience?

This may sound silly but before you pull the sub out of the box, dig in there and get the manual out and read it over. I believe the instructions are in there on how to remove it properly. Furthermore, it will talk about setting the gain at approximately 2 o'clock, which is out of the norm for other manufactures but common with this amp. Placement is obviously key, as I learned that the hard way...then run Audyssey or utilize a spl meter to calibrate correctly.

Any idea if like SVS, that factory tours are offered? Also, I saw that some customers received a discount (but paid sales tax) for local pickup. Any idea what that sort of pricing might be like?

We generally take $50 off on the XS15 and XV15, $75 off on the XS30 and XV30 if someone picks up. Please, don't show up in a smart car to pick up a pair of XV30s though..smile.gif

+1. And do not hesitate in emailing/calling if you run into *any* setup or calibration hiccups.

Somewhat placement (and/or frequency)dependent...smile.gif If I were suggesting the above I'm guessing it would be in a scenario where the triple XS15 were all placed in different locations of the room. For example, if you had dual XS15s with one in the front/left and one in the front/right....say 12-15ft apart....

In the deeper bass (12-35hz) the dual XS15s would be very close to a single XS30 in terms of output. In the 35-65hz range the XS30 would gain a bit of an edge...perhaps 1.5-2.0dB. And in the upper bass (65-100hz) the single XS30 would have a 5-6dB advantage on average. If you add a third XS15 (to the dual XS15s) placed in another area of the room you'll gain another 2-3dB most likely. In this scenario the single XS30 will still have the upper bass advantage, things would be very close in the mid bass(35-65hz) but the triple XS15s would gain the edge <35hz.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the reply. Guess after adding OH tax it's not much of a savings, and actually costs more on the more expensive subs. Might you be available to offer a critique of some sub positions? I'm about to start my theater area in the next couple of months.

Hey Tom - I got 2 XS15s from you a couple weeks back and I love love love them! But, I think I need a 3rd sub to help even out the response across multiple seating positions. Do you think an XS30 would be overkill for me? Do you think one more XS15 would probably do it for me?

Hi Alan.

I still have your room drawing on file. Could you remind me where the dual XS15s are right now?

Also, which receiver/processor where you using again? Instead of a third woof have you considered an external EQ?

Tom,

The XS15s are currently postioned; one up front, between FR and TV, and one in back left corner (phase set to ~90 degrees). I seem to get better coverage and smoother bass than when I had both up front. I am also currently awaiting my new USB mic to get more in-depth with REW, so things will most likely change after I get some good measurements.

I'm using a Denon 2113ci and external EQ (BFD) is definitely on my list (if needed). My plans after I get some good measurements with REW are to (1) optimize sub placement,(2) apply acoustic treatments, then (3) EQ, with finally (4) more subs only if needed. smile.gif I'm just kind of thinking ahead, and more subs may not even be needed...guess I'm kinda jumping the gun really. I need to get solid measurements of my room before I can start doing anything really.

Hi Alan,

I was reviewing your posted measurements in this thread (post 1457) and once you engage Audyssey the in room looks fairly good. You are at +/- 5 from 15-100hz. Really not bad at all for an untreated room. An external EQ(with your new mic) may get you to +/- 3 with some careful tweaking. Adding a third subwoofer will have the potential to help too....but i'm not sure I'd lean that way "out of the gate" unless you were also looking for a bit more headroom too?

More headroom is not needed...at least not yet. wink.gif

Those measurements I made before really can't be trusted. I used an SPL meter for my mic and that rise from 15hz-10hz is a bit suspect - the XS15s are good, but probably not that good. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the advice, and I'll get back to you once I have some 'real' measurements to post!

If I'm repeating myself, forgive me. Most sound meters are designed to be good down to 31.5Hz. Just saying.
