Buffalo, NY - HDTV - Page 217

I'm not so sure. Reading the forums on the Canadian OTA site, some people in and around Toronto had the same issues. It wasn't like the signal was decreasing. It was full power then out in an instant, and then back to full power again.

I have a question about smart tvs and their relationship/interface with devices like the set top box.....

What EPG, GUI does it use, its own or the set top box's ?

From my experience....

There is no relationship between set top boxes and smart tvs. Each is its own beast.
The 'smart' tvs are deemed 'smart' if they have an internet connection and a few apps built in like Netflix. As far as electronic programming guides, that really hasn't been part of the smart apps although it should be. There doesn't seem to be any standard among the tv manufacturers and how they display the program information is all over the map from tv to tv. If I were making a TV, I would pull the program guide from the internet like Windows Media Center does. Maybe some of the 2012 models will do this but I haven't seen anyone advertising that capability yet.

I knew it was too good to be true - the glitch every 30 seconds is back and worse than ever. Stupid channel 7

I was out of town last month. When I returned, I noticed that TVGOS on my DTVPAL DVR (F208) was gone. That was three weeks ago. Is this a problem in general with the local TVGOS (Buffalo, NY) or is it likely unique to my DVR? I thought I'd ask before taking drastic action like a device reset.

UPDATE: I went back and read the help writeup at the beginning of the DTVPAL DVR forum. I think the problem was because I had the DVR unplugged for over a week when I was out of town so it wasn't getting TVGOS updates and stopped looking. So I did a Factory Defaults reset. Now I'll need to wait and see if TVGOS comes back within the next day or two.

Thanks.

That would do it.

Gemstar, now Rovi's data in this market has been remarkably reliable. Except for a couple of months ago where an encoder at the host station (WNED) went south, that was the only time I really had any problem other then occasional missed days during the week or seven day listings (instead of eight).

Not at what they are asking for it or the yearly Guide subscription cost either.

yea - the fine print was kind of a downer.

Yes, the unplugged DVR is what did it. After factory reset and waiting a day, TVGOS was back.

AND; a metal case, enabled external storage, a reasonable yearly subscription charge (under $75), dual RF inputs, CC slot, etc.

To my surprise, channel 36 has been coming in on occasion. Got to watch Gilligan's Island for the 1st time in a long time.

5, 19, 41 are always there
9, 11 are there most of the time
10, 13, 47, 57, 69 are rare.

On a good night I can get all 11 Canadian channels.
I'm wondering if swapping out my Clearstream 2 for a Clearstream 4 will help me get them all the time. Anyone have any experience with the Clearstream 4?

9 CFTO is VHF,
11 CHCH, also VHF is a different compass direction,
10 & 13 are also Rochester,
The two Omni's (physical 47 & virtual 69) are weaker,
44 City (virtual 57) has the lowest ERP.

I forgot about channel 25 - I always get that too. Now all I need to do is learn French

Has anyone noticed that WKBW has now begun broadcasting their local commercials and syndicated programming in HD. I guess their master control is now fully outsourced.

It's about time. I hope they still show local commercials in HD next time i watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
You know what, I stand to be slightly corrected. They aired "The Doctors" and all of its commercials in HD at 4PM. Maybe they were just testing. I did notice that Wheel and Jeopardy were in SD. I know they are not capable of HD playback from their own facility for syndicated shows.
That's definitely interesting that they had The Doctors in HD though. I know I've been dying to see syndicated HD on that station because the SD picture quality is just so awful. I know back in Syracuse our NBC, CW and CBS stations (I believe they all run under through the same people now) don't do "real" HD for syndicated programming but they upscale widescreen for shows like Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, Jeopardy, Wheel and some others. It actually isn't that bad and it's a big improvement over SD.
Tonight, so far, I see Wheel is in HD, real HD not upscaled, on WKBW. I'm guessing Jeopardy will also be in HD too. I'm also noticing only a few commercials are HD, most seem to be SD still.
That's great news. Glad to hear that and I'm looking forward to watching it.
I don't care if the Commercials are in HD or SD. As Long as the show is in HD i'll be happy.
Wheel, Jeopardy and The Doctors were all in HD on Friday. I think their entire weekday sched. is now in HD
post #6506 of 6985
CIII (virtual & physical 41) has a SD sub channel??

What's up with that? And what a waste duplicating their HD channel. Another WNED?
Ya, I agree, what a waste of bandwidth. I think they are just testing. Unfortunately they cannot offer a sub-channel with any different content without CRTC approval. I dont think any Canadian broadcaster will ever offer sub-channels unless they get mandatory cable and satellite carriage.
Testing for what reason?? Someone bored?

Obviously the October plan didn't materialize but I am hearing this will happen by the end of this month. Other Canadian news WNY OTAers might be interested in:

- CKXT /Sun News is now permanently off the air (was 66.1 in Toronto, 15.1 in Hamilton)
- CBC PSIP Program guide data is expected to return November 28th

Problems moving all the equipment??

Is CFTO still providing Rovi data for TVGuide On Screen?
