In my parents' house they have a Tivo Premiere. This allows them to download movies from Amazon HD at 1080p, and watch it whenever they want. (Amazon HD has much better video quality than Netflix FYI, at least on the videos that I saw).

Where I live, I don't have cable TV and don't want it. I just use an over the air antenna. However, I would like to be able to download 1080p movies and watch them whenever I want. I know you can do this with a Tivo Premiere, but I'm not sure about a Roku, because the Roku doesn't have a hard drive to store the movie, and so it has to stream the movie in HD. My internet connection is only about 300 kb/second and can't support an HD stream, so I need to be able to download the movie like on the Tivo. However, I don't want to pay Tivo's $15 monthly fee since I don't have cable.

Any way to get a Roku type of box, and download the movie so that I can watch 1080p movies on the internet?

Also, is there any way you can just do this on your computer? I know Amazon HD doesn't let you download 1080p movies to your computer (I imagine they only let you download it to the Tivo because Tivo has better rights protection features).

Streaming is the norm with Amazon. TiVo still has it's old amazon application which only allows downloads.

But wouldn't the ability to download be an advantage, because you can watch 1080p movies without having to worry about whether you have the bandwidth to stream them? Odd that they're moving to an inferior feature.

In case anyone is curious, there are two solutions to the above problem:

1. Tivo Series 2 as described above.

2. Itunes on your laptop (which you connect to your TV via HDMI).

Both let you download HD movies, as opposed to stream them.

Streaming or even VOD is not designed for such slow download rates. at 300kb/s some of the services would take a very long time to download an HD title.
