Updating UnRAID Box:

So I was going nuts combing through the UnRAID logs trying to work out why it's shutting down after 5 minutes once I've finally plugged everything together and shut the case, I think I've found at least part of the problem this is the CPU1 fan and believe it or not, it's actually in a better state than the CPU2 fan!

Expanding unRAID Server:

^an Unraid server is next on my to do list given my 8TB NAS is full.......I dont know anyone with one, is it a simple thing to get going? a complete PITA? or somewhere in between?

There are many was to do it and so I think your milage may vary (and I'm more than happy to help where I can), you can get complete UnRAID servers from Lime Tech and I think you would have an easy life and massive storage smile.gif
I decided to go the self build route both because I like the technology side and to save money, so it's been an interesting path so far as you've probably seen from the previous posts but on the other hand, there's no other way I could have afforded a NAS box that can grow to share 32TB of video using 2TB drives.
As I'm still getting to grips with my UnRAID server (one of the HDDs just went offline during my 7TB data load), I'm going to use it as secondary storage for a while and use my 3TB Apple RAID box as my HT production system.

I think unraid is extremely easy to set up. I've had mine running for a while now (2 years, maybe?) on WD EARS drives.

I did have 2 times where I had to reboot because it was frozen. I moved it onto an APC UPS and haven't had issues since. I think maybe there was a power sag or something that was screwing with the server (not an unraid issue, per se).

It is set and forget.

My varied experience with UnRAID continues, it's rejected another 2TB drive so I currently am using the parity drive to share my data, more and more I'm coming to the conclusion that I'm going to use it as near-line storage and use the 2TB Apple RAID as my primary video server.
If I can find another good source of 500TB PATA HDDs then I can expand the Apple RAID to 6TB.

S shaped steps and curtains:
Sometimes you put off a job for months because deep down you know it's going to be a nightmare and sometimes you find your instincts are spot on! smile.gif
It took me more than 6 months to progress from the straight steps curtains to the S shaped steps curtains........

Sorry to hear that.. my system is working fine, but I don't touch anything. I added another movie last weekend.. beyond that I don't mess with it.

Eventually I will just build another one (I bought the 2-pack unRaid USB stick... now where did that second one go?)

It could also be your mobo.

All true, I'm just going to stick with the Xserve for a while as I'm fed up feeding my unraid box drives and I can fit all of the family library in to 3TB.

I'm still having no luck with cheap SATA extender cards either so I'm limited to 4 drives, unless I can solve that then I'm at a bit of a dead end with that server.

Finally pulled the trigger on a Jamestown 150" Seymour XD 16:9 screen, only (an unknown but too many weeks) until I can finish my screen wall! smile.gif

Will be heading into that territory shortly - building a NAS box - wish me luck!

Woot - how was the picture on the wall? I watched for several weeks on $30 of thumbtacked up white muslin, it actually wasn't bad if you just watched the movie and ignored the wrinkles. smile.gif

Good Luck!
I've pretty much given up on my UNRAID box and I'm expanding my Xserve RAID instead as I see good deals come up on the 500GB IDE drives that it takes.

The picture on the current (second) temporary screen wasn't bad, it's on stretched muslin from JoAnn fabrics and is wrinkle free but it lets too much light through that reflects on the rear wall (something else to fix when I get the real screen) but at least I no longer have the seams from the first (bedsheet) temporary screen. smile.gif

I'm going to go with FlexRAID (snapshot "raid"), we'll see how it goes

You should be fine, to be honest my UNRAID problems come down to 2 issues that I just got fed up trying to troubleshoot:
1) It keeps rejecting 2TB drives during the data load that work perfectly well elsewhere.
2) I can't find a cheap PCI-X SATA card to use as a SATA port extender so I'm limited to 5 drives (including parity).

Are you buying Apple refurb'd/eBay'd drives? The Xserve I used to manage at work could only take Apple drives. I tried 2 different brands, but this was back in 2008 so things may have changed.

I'm using a combination of Xserve 500GB and other 500GB drives and it's working great, ironically the previously impossible to find 750GB Xserve drives have started showing up on eBay so now of course I want them instead wink.gif
post #176 of 185
Glad they're working out. I had a chance to grab an Xserve when my company was acquired, but for the rackspace, it wasn't really worth it. Plus it had just 500GB drives, and a split backplane that meant you were really stuck with two 6 disk arrays, instead of a big 12 disk volume. With a disk for hotspare in each side, and RAID5, that meant I only got about 4TB total, and it didn't seem worth the bother. Plus Apple's RAID/Xserve utilities were annoying; pretty, but restrictive.

I'll be running it as 2x3GB as they'll be backed up to standard drives so I don't need a hot spare.
I know it's more of a labor of love as I really like the technology but I can't be bothered to resolve my UNRAID issues and this just works. smile.gif

You know you're obsessive when it takes you 6 different wood stains before you're happy with the tint of the wood that you're going to use for your curtain headers.......

Yeah - noone else will notice, but if you don't do it right, it will probably bug the **** out of you
