LOOPER -- new, original sci-fi action film

From director Rian Johnson (Brick, The Brothers Bloom) comes a brand new, original sci-fi action film. What adds to the intrigue is that this is the first film that filmmaker Shane Carruth has been involved with since his incredible debut Primer back in 2004. Shane has been involved with visual FX and other post work. Shane has written his next film. called A Topiary and is currently seeking funding. I imagine his friendship with Rian and his being on the verge of his next undertaking is what has driven him to work on this film.

Anyway, Rian describes the films as such: Looper is a time travel movie, set in a near future where time travel doesn’t exist but will be invented in a few decades. It’s pretty dark in tone, much different from Bloom, and involves a group of killers (called Loopers) who work for a crime syndicate in the future. Their bosses send their targets hogtied and blindfolded back in time to the Loopers, and their job is to simply shoot them in the head and dispose of the body. So the target vanishes from the future and the Loopers dispose of a corpse that doesn’t technically exist, a very clean system. Complications set in from there..

Cast is Piper Perabo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. The official tagline is "A killer who works for the mob of the future recognizes one of his targets as his future self.", and the release date is late September.

Check out this article for more recent info as well as some early buzz from test screenings: http://www.slashfilm.com/early-buzz-...hnsons-looper/

One excerpt from AICN: LOOPER is an intricately structured story enlivened by Johnson’s trademark wit and wounded romanticism. It’s an invigorating, thrilling, ceaselessly inventive film, a miracle in an era of by-committee studio filmmaking. And while it’s still months from being finished, barring any postproduction monkey business, it’s already a great movie.

I like 'em.
More please.

This is The Kiss of Death.

While that is true, I think that quote is from one of the newer contributors.. not Harry or Quint.

This does sound good, although a cold-case nightmare: "Hey, this guy is suddenly missing but his DNA matches this body we discovered 60 years ago...."

But I suppose there's better ways to dispose of a body that nobody is looking for so it's not discovered. It was just the first thing that popped into my head. Or maybe that's the plot and the "complications set in from there" line.

Wouldn't the future victim-self always know what the past killer-self had been up to? Just another wrinkle on the always formidable paradoxes prevalent in these tales.

But that's just part of the fun.
Every time travel movie I have ever seen has a paradox or a suspension of disbelief problem (particularly for those who have had some science education).

"new, original"

Yeah, I don't know. If it is not a reboot, sequel, or old TV show, doesn't sound that intersting. Is it in 3d at least?

New image from the set, features the director (Rian Johnson) in the "womb" of his time machine:

It was posted on the film's official Tumblr, for those interested (features some great BTS photos): http://loopermovie.tumblr.com/

Great looking stylish trailer but I don't get this "what if the target is yourself" crap. How is this even freaking possible? so there's 2 of you that can exist at the same time? What a bunch of bull dong. I'm tired of this running out of ideas and trying to reach for straws and be more intricate and cool nonsense like Inception. I'll pass this stupid circle of confusion. Let's keep it real folks

You make my brain hurt much more than the plot of this film.

Have a little faith, Rian Johnson is a talented filmmaker and all you've seen so far is a brief plot synopsis and small teaser.

Test screenings went very well from all reports so I am curious. But, of course, it'll be PG-13.

Lol dude, you have a condition. You need help! There have been plenty of great films that were PG-13. It's one thing to think less of a film that was shot 'R' and then cut to 'PG-13' later in order to maximize ticket sales... but it's another thing entirely to dismiss a film simply because it is PG-13.

Agreed.
Matt, you need to get your Doc to write you a scrip for Xanax....

This trailer doesn't do much for me, it gives me a real feeling of "been there, done that."

First of all, it was sarcasm! Jeeesh. You do know what is, right? I am fully aware of there being superb PG-13 films. See INCEPTION. Bingo.

Secondly, go see LOCKOUT and learn why PG-13 can completely ruin an action film.

Hmmm... SWAT. Oh wait, that sucked.

Well, just got back from the theater, and I've got to say that I really enjoyed this movie. Joseph Gordon-Levitt sure had a different look about him. (At first I thought he had a brother smile.gif ) His look reminded me of Daniel Craig.
The story was very involving and well-acted. If you are the type who feels the need to pick apart time travel films then it may not be for you, but I felt the film was more than that.
I'm a bit surprised that there isn't more of a buzz with this film. - - - - - Plus, it's R rated so maybe even Matt will check it out. biggrin.gif

Same here, considering who's in it and that it's at 93% on RT out of 177 reviews.

Looper is on my Must See list. I almost went today but got distracted and ended up doing something else. Its cast is a who's who of my favorite actors and its director, Rian Johnson, directed another film that I am especially fond of, The Brothers Bloom. Johnson's stuff is always tightly written and filled with actors who really know their stuff. I hope to see it early next week.
