Another recommendation needed thread.

Hi everyone, I was in the receivers section looking for advice but it looks like now I need speaker help 1st. I've never had a home theater set up. I just ordered a panny P65VT30 so I'd like to complement it with decent sound. I live in a 1 bedroom apt so the living room, kitchen and dining room is basically all in one. The total overall size is around 24x17, living room is around 14x14 and i'll be 11-12' from the tv. Seems like I should stay away from HTIB setups and build my own.

Being in an apartment im not going to have it cranked all the time, though where im situated I think the only people that will hear it is people walking by the front door. Im on the 3rd floor, the 2nd floor is a show/demo apartment so nobody lives in it.

I'd like to keep the speaker budget somewhere under $750ish if possible. Ive noticed people putting in movie/music ratios so I guess mine would be 97/3. I'd be listening to very little music, i'll be using my setup for blu-ray movies.

Thanks in advance for any advice/info.

Scott

You are right. Building your own is a good strategy. Infinity Primus and Polk Monitor speakers are popular choices for building your first system. Check Amazon and Newegg for prices.

Does your budget include the subwoofer, too, or were you planning on buying that separately?

I can live without a sub for now if that is the best strategy. I can put it in next months budget.

If you are mostly watching movies, a good subwoofer is required. Are you looking at a 5.1, 2.0 or 3.1 system?
The Polk Monitor 40 desktop speakers can often be found on New egg for $100/par and the Monitor 70 towers are on sale right now for $149.00.
As pointed out above, the Infinity Primus is a good "for the buck" speaker as well...

I prefer a 5.1 setup.

I think those Polk specials are over at Newegg.
