Up in the air over PS3

To start, I think we've had/have every gaming system under the sun, from Pong to 360. We are all avid gamers and I thought as a nice gift this year maybe we could add a PS3 to our collection since that's the only one we don't have and they have a nice bundle with Uncharted 3 (and by the commercials it looks awesome). Would there be any advantage to adding this system to our list besides a couple games? I already have a BD player and online gaming isn't something we're really interested in, so are the few games that are PS3 only worth the investment?

The Uncharted series is a FANTASTIC series. Now, if that's worth the price of admission to you, only you can decide. You won't find something as engrossing on the 360 side of the house.

People w/ both consoles tend to favor the 360 for everything but PS3 exclusives (from what I have observed at least).

God of War remastered and God of War 3 are also amazing.

The number of PS3 exclusives is extensive. There's a thread at the top of this forum listing all the PS3 console exclusives- a pretty long list. If you and your clan are avid gamers there's probably one or two in there that would make the PS3 worth a buy. If you go for the UC3 bundle, get the Uncharted Dual Pack and play the first two. I think Amazon is selling the dual pack for $25.

Hard to say. There are good exclusives on both sides, so only you can decide if the exclusives for PS3 interest you enough to warrant the investment (you should look through the list).

I will say I despise the controller, but bought a cheap 360-like controller from Walmart and have been enjoying gaming on my PS3 a lot more because of it (this is the one I bought)

Outside of gaming, and I'm not sure this matters to you, but the PS3 is one of the best Netflix streamers out there (one of only a couple that does both 1080p and 5.1). If you use Netflix streaming and don't already have one of the other 1080p/5.1 devices, it would be bonus. And of course it does Vudu and Hulu+ and a few others as well.

I can't imagine being a gamer without a PS3, you are missing a lot of the best games this gen. The 360 has dried up almost completely for exclusives, so get a black friday bundle for $199 and enjoy five years of missed games.

Singleplayer PS3 exclusive games limits it quite a bit but there are still good games. Online is free, so even if you don't like MP, you can take advantage of the online in games for maps, levels, etc.

God of War stuff (3 games, though 2 are comps)
ICO/SOTC Collection
Sly Cooper Collection
Ratchet & Clank
Uncharted Series
Motorstorm Series
Gran Turismo 5
Demon's Souls (sequel is out on 360 though)
inFAMOUS
Valkyria Chronicles
Yakuza 3/4
Resistance series
Killzone series
Metal Gear Solid 4
LittleBigPlanet 2

... those would be the ones you're likely to focus on (stay away from Haze and Lair, lol), so it all depends on how much that stuff interests you.

PSN also has a fair amount of cool games like the Pixeljunk series.

Time's have changed. Head over to the Exclusives thread and take a gander.

Personally, Sony tends to be the Dev that offers the types and genres I love most, and also doesn't mind taking a chance on a unproven game or game format. That tends to pay off, at least in entertainment to me.

Really good call if you enjoy mixing up FPS.

Agreed that it's probably good to enjoy the backlog of exclusives, although I would say exclusives have dried up for both: if Wikipedia is right, since June, it's a whopping 2 games for the PS3 (Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3) and a whopping 3 for the 360 (Gears of War 3, Forza 4, and the Halo CE remake). If I was a heavy gamer, I'd be disappointed, but as it is, I'm not...I have all 3 systems and am so far behind I just started Portal 2. Woo-hoo! I might get to Red Dead Redemption by Christmas! Then around March I'll pick up Uncharted 3 for $20.

Anyways, exclusives are few and far between nowadays, but there's quite a backlog if you haven't played any PS3 ones.

Okay, yes I am behind the times . Thank you for all of the info and a PS3 will be in my shopping cart along with quite a few of the games! I had no idea there were so many I was missing out on.

But before June, we got Killzone 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Sly Cooper collection, Infamous 2, DC Universe, MLB The Show, SOCOM 4, etc. I don't know why Sony slated almost all their franchises to get a sequel in 2011, but they did.

On 360 there was... some Kinect stuff maybe, but that doesn't count.

360's exclusive situation has been pretty pitiful the past few years. Forza, Halo, and Fable in alternating years. And Fable is awful. At least we got Gears this year.

And don't forget to check out the PSN exclusive downloadables: Flower, Joe Danger, Dead Nation, the PixelJunk series. PSN also offers Siren: Blood Curse, a very atmospheric survival-horror game that was a retail release in Japan.

Also got the both GOW collections.

Next year is also looking great with Sony. Twisted Metal in Feb and Starhawk somewhere between Jan-March most likely.

Another nice thing about the PS3 is that you can get a TON of storage space for your system for very little money. You can find a good deal online for a very high capacity storage device and easily upgrade the HDD on the PS3 without having to purchase a proprietary HDD like on the 360. Doing so doesn't even void your warranty, and Sony even shows you how to do it in the system documentation. (Of course, you should always go ahead and do some research before hand).

For me, I love having my PS3 available to hold DVDs I've ripped and transferred over to the HDD (I do this for the movies I own that I just wouldn't feel like digging into my DVD collection for to find the disc in order to pop it in), it's great for housing the mp3s and cds that I own, and it's a nice storage device for all the digital photos I have. I'm a big fan of watching the videogame playthroughs from places like YouTube and GameAnyone.com, and after downloading and merging the files together I can just transfer them right over to my PS3.

So for overall multimedia purposes, the PS3 is great. If you like baseball videogames, the most realistic and true-to-the-sport game out there is a PS3 exclusive. MLB The Show. The God of War series is fantastic, and all games from the series are now available on the PS3 only. (The original two, God of War and God of War II, are in the God of War HD Collection. God of War III came out on the PS3, and recently the two PSP games were put out in the God of War Origins Collection.) So you can pretty much play the entire series right there on your PS3.

If you like the Metal Gear Solid series, while it is possible to get the recently released HD Collection on the 360, MGS4 is still exclusive to the PS3. The PS3 is the only system where you can play all four MGS games. MGS2, MGS3 in the recently released collection, MGS4 in the PS3 exclusive disc, and the original MGS can be downloaded from the PSN.

Gran Turismo 5 is an incredible automotive simulator, and if you are a bit scared by the number of replies in the GT5 thread here on the forums, just take a look at what most of those posts are. They are incredibly nit-picky, Type A personality posts which just means that it's a damned good game and people have to dig to find something to whine about.
