looking to buy one soon ( 200-400 price range )

hey guys...

I am fed up with my plasma tv's ( panny 50 inch S1 ) speakers and want to get a decent sound when watching tv, movies and gaming on my xbox 360..

plus I think at least a virtual surround sound is needed to enjoy action movies.. so it looks a sound bar solution would be nice...

I was at best buy the other day and the sales guy showed me the LG LSB316..it pretty has everything I need.. wireless sub, bluetooth

I've read some reviews at amazon and here... it looks the sound is not so great...

most of you will probably say sony or yamaha sounds really better but I think they lack the bluetooth..

I really liked the idea of streaming mp3 or pandora from my iphone/ipad to the sound bar...

so I am like in between this LG, Sony HTCT550W , Sony CT 150, Polk Audio AM1805, Yamaha S400 and Samsung D550

plus what is the best way to connect any of these sound bars to my set up ?

bestbuy guy said I only need 1 optical cable from my tv to the sound bar and thats it...

is this the best way ? or I should hook all up individually...

thanks.

Technically, the BB guy is correct BUT the TV will only output 2.0 stereo (except from its internal tuner). To get better sound quality going in to a soundbar you either need to connect components via HDMI to the soundbar, or run optical from the component to the soundbar in addition to your HDMI connection for video to the TV.

All of the soundbars you listed are pretty good and deserve a listen. I'm not aware that any of them support bluetooth though.

I don't think the Polk Audio AM1805 has a optical connection. That would be a deal breaker for me since my tv only has one audio out and it's a optical connection. I'm in the same boat as you, but I've already tried one and it didn't work. The Visio VSB200 Optical was a no go. I just want a low profile good bar without a sub or with fine, but under $250.

I've been looking at the YHT-S400BL, but it's a little pricey and that very small bar looks like it wouldn't get much rich sound.

Why dont you just run your cable box and bluray player into the soundbar instead of running your TV into it. That's the best way to do it in order to take advantage of the artificial surround sound. Your TV can only output 2.0 channel audio.

I don't have a cable box, just a Blu-ray player and computer sometimes in this set-up, so if I did what you suggest, I wouldn't get any output for watching tv or on my computer, if the soundbar only has one optical connection. I tried the VSB200, but it was a little big, sort of ugly, and the optical didn't work on the one I picked up, so I returned it. I like the new Yamaha single soundbar, but it's been getting some bad reviews and it's a little tall. In any case, I think I've given up on finding a soundbar that will work, at least for now. They are either too tall to place in front of my tv (over 4") or they come with a mediocre sub that I don't want. They are also sort of expensive, in comparison to buying good quality bookshelves I can hang on either side of the tv.

I just purchased a Outlaw M8 sub for this setup, and I'm now working on some hangable bookshelves. This is sort of temporary, until I actually find a soundbar that will meet my needs. I'm looking for one that has optical and sub connection (w/o a sub) and is either short enough to place under my tv (under 3 1/2") or is light enough to hang above. But I don't really like the idea of hanging a bar above the tv if I can help it. Fyi, this is for a bedroom setup. I already have a an old receiver I'm using for this.

I got a sony ct150 today... Havent tested with a bluray yet but it sounds okay so far... I dont really know what to expect from a sound bar though...

Best buy guy pushed my towards LG lsb316 again... It does have the bluetooth streaming I want but it had many bad reviews...

Polk 3000 sounded best at best buy but I wanted to have the hdmi switching..

I actually was gonna go with a CT550 but it also had bad reviews... 2.1 instead of 3.1... I wanted crisp clear center channel...

Wireless sub is no big deal for me.. My sub can sit next to the tv...

Currently I hooked up with the optical cable from my tv... Will order some hdmi 1.4 cables ( amazon basics is 1.4 right??? ) and see if there is any difference...

I listened to a mariah carey concert that was in my DVR.. Sound was better when I also turned on the tv speakers.... When watching cable.. Tv speakers caused an echo so I muted them...

Also not sure if my panny has a arc hdmi port... It is a 50 inch S1.. with 3 hdmi ports...1 on the side..2 at the back..

Current settings are... Sw +3, center +4, bass +3 and treble +4...

Games on xbox was loud.. set the xbox to dolby digital 5.1 mode...
